Teen Mom 2: Things You Might Not Know About Leah Messer

Being a reality star is a rocky road for many and the ladies of Teen Mom, and Teen Mom 2 is no exception. For five years and seven seasons, fans have watched as four ladies who appeared on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant were selected to continue telling their story on the spin-off Teen Mom 2, including Leah Messer, who has had one of the most dramatic and emotional stories of them all. Leah is the only one of the Teen Moms to deal with twins (one of whom has severe health issues), two divorces and a third daughter. The past couple of seasons have been particularly rough on Leah, yet she continues to share her story with the world. Check out 10 things you didn’t know about Leah Messer:

10. Net Worth

The salary of Teen Mom’s stars has been a point of contention for quite some time, as viewers were first made to believe being on the show wasn’t supporting the stars, but all this time later, it is obvious it is. While many never talk about having a job, they have no problem buying new houses and cars, and Leah is no exception. In an Instagram rant from Teen Mom 2 star Chelsea Houska’s ex Adam Lind, he revealed that Houska made $250,000 for season 6 of the show and was aiming for $300 thousand for new seasons, which will correlate to the rest of the star’s salaries, including Leah. Not to mention she also has tons of legal and medical bills because of her daughter’s health issue and her divorces from Corey Simms and Jeremy Calvert, so narrowing down Leah’s financial situation is particularly tricky.

9. Aliannah’s Illness

From the time Leah and Corey’s twins, Aliannah and Aleeah, were born it was clear that Aliannah was not developing at the same rate. After several hospital visits, scans and specialists, it wasn’t until the middle of season 2 did Leah and Corey finally learn that Aliannah was suffering from muscular dystrophy, and it wasn’t until season 5 that it was narrowed down to the super rare Titin muscular dystrophy. It is so rare that it has only been found in adults, meaning Aliannah is the only child in the world with the disorder and in total less than 20 people have Ali’s particular form of muscular dystrophy. Unfortunately, its rareness means not a whole lot is known about the disease yet and this most recent season has already seen a decline in Ali’s muscle strength with her doctor warning Leah and Corey, “it goes downhill” after she turns seven.

8. Childhood

Fans who have followed Leah’s story are well aware that things are not always easy for the young mom of three, and as it turns out she is no stranger to battling the odds. Leah’s mother, Delta Dawn Spears welcomed Messer when she was only 17 herself and had only $200 in her bank account, and according to reports from Radar Online, they got by by using food stamps for many, many years. While Dawn was able to keep her family afloat which included Leah as well as another son and daughter, it wasn’t easy and in 2005 she filed for bankruptcy. It seems things have improved financially for the family in the years since, thanks in large part to Leah’s Teen Mom 2 fame.

7. Unhealthy Household

A little while ago, an anonymous former camera operator got very candid when discussing his time filming the Teen Mom stars in an online Q&A and revealed that Leah’s house was extremely unsanitary. According to the former camera operator, Leah’s house was by far the worst and even felt as if someone should call child protective services because of the state of the living conditions. “Filthy houses (dog poop on the floor, bloody tampons sitting in a corner for months, weeks old food everywhere, etc.) one of the worst is Leah, filthiest person I’ve met.” Leah’s inability to keep her house or car in order finally pushed her now ex-husband Jeremy Calvert over the edge last season. Now that the twin girls are getting older, they too are speaking out. In different scenes they have complained about there being no food in the house and being hungry, which has caused a lot of concern from viewers.

6. Rocky Relationships

At only 24 years old, Leah’s relationships haven’t exactly ended up the way she thought resulting in two divorces and three children, but there is so much more to her story than things just not working out. Leah and Corey found out they were pregnant only one month after they began dating, and were also hit with the bombshell they were expecting twins. Although the two got married after already going through cheating drama on 16 and Pregnant, it wasn’t until the end of Teen Mom 2 season two that Corey found out Leah had cheated with the same ex, Robbie, only two weeks before their wedding, leading to their divorce. If that wasn’t bad enough, there was a huge bombshell when Corey and Leah revealed on a Teen Mom 2 reunion special that they had hooked up after Corey had already remarried Miranda Patterson, and seemingly while Leah was with Jeremy. Leah confirmed that they did hook up two months after his marriage to Miranda and it was all of a sudden clear why Miranda didn’t seem pleased to be filmed and was very cool in her interactions with Leah. Although Miranda and Corey are still together, Miranda has reportedly enforced rules to make sure she always knows exactly when Corey is talking to Leah and everything they say.

5. Treatment

In Teen Mom 2 season 6, it was very clear that things were beginning to slip out of Leah’s control and there was more than one concerning scene in which she seemed more than just a little out of it or tired. While she admitted to taking medication for depression and anxiety, rumors quickly flew that she was abusing them and even Corey confronted her about it several times, even stating that people were coming up to him letting him know Leah was running around town asking were she could buy pills and “anything she could get her hands on.” She has adamantly denied having a drug problem, but did enter treatment shortly after because of her mental health issues, and still doesn’t have everyone convinced drugs were not a problem.

4. Miscarriage

Due to how quickly it seems Leah moved on with Jeremy following her divorce from Corey and became pregnant with their daughter Adalynn, many forget she had pregnancy troubles before the two welcomed Addie. Leah and Jeremy became pregnant in late 2011, just shortly after getting together, but in early 2012, Leah sadly lost the baby. While she was devastated, the loss also made her question whether she wanted to be a mom again so soon, and decided to go back on birth control; however, by mid 2012 the couple became pregnant again and welcomed Addie in February 2013.

3. MTV Feud

Shortly after the season premiere of Teen Mom 2‘s seventh season, Leah made it quite clear she was not happy with the way MTV edits her story to make everything seem worse than it is. In late March, 2016, a fan tweeted at the star commenting on how they would never choose to appear on a show like that after seeing the hate Leah receives. In response she wrote, “It’s sad how the person behind the editing can even live a happy life by editing to manipulate the audience watching. It makes me feel like my life story isn’t enough.” She ended up going on an extended rant talking about hitting rock bottom and trying to help people with her story adding,  “I wanted to bring awareness and HELP others and if MTV couldn’t share that then I will do it on my own the way God wants me to!!!!” She also went on to add, “And it hurts to feel BETRAYED by the ones I THOUGHT I could trust with my story. It goes to show you how ’THE ENTERTAINMENT WORLD’ really is and I guess everyone will see where I REALLY am starting episode 4.” While the attack was leveled at MTV, she did say she wants to continue sharing her story and MTV declined to comment on her rant.

2. Corey’s MTV Feelings

In a surprise move, Corey feels the same way about MTV’s editing tactics, and doing anything to get ratings, saying he thought they didn’t handle Leah’s potential drug problem properly, and made him out to be the villain. “He thinks they had a perfect opportunity to show viewers, ‘This is what happens when you get on drugs, this is the reality.’ Instead, they made it seem like Corey was constantly attacking Leah for no reason,” a friend of Corey’s told Radar Online. As a result, fans should expect to see much less of Corey and Miranda this season, as they have never been fans of having their lives filmed and have tried to quit before, with this incident only making it worse. “Corey told MTV what he thought about the situation, and said that he and Miranda would not film nearly as much as in past seasons.”

1. Hidden Relationship

Given how quickly Leah’s relationships progress, it seems she was determined to keep her newest boyfriend following her split from Jeremy a secret. Back in June, 2015 rumors quickly flew that less than a week of being officially divorced, Leah was already dating personal trainer T.R. Dues, 32, and as much as she tried to hide it, it quickly became evident that they were living together, which apparently angered Jeremy quite a bit. As of late January 2016, Messer tweeted she is single, and it seems the two are no longer living together.
