It’s been sixteen years since the series finale for Sex and the City aired, and fans are still wondering how Mr. Big got his name, John, which was revealed in the episode.

Throughout the show, the infamous Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) referred to her on-and-off love interest as Mr.Big without ever revealing his real name. In the show’s final moment, Carrie is shown opening her sparkly flip phone and revealing “John” was calling her.

The executive producer of the hit television show, Michael Patrick King, opened up to Entertainment Weekly about how the name John was chosen. “I just went, ‘John,’” King shared while mimicking the action of typing on a keyboard. “I told all the writers and they were like, ‘What the h*ll?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, we have to say his name, because now he’s real.’”

When questioned why he chose such an ordinary name for a highly anticipated moment, King revealed, “If I was giving him a name, I wanted it to be the most generic, American, almost pilgrim name,” he said. “It’s just John.”

In another shocking Sex and the City revelation, the show’s executive team released an alternative opening to the series this past month which excluded the iconic scene of Carrie getting splashed by a bus. “There were two wardrobes. One was the tutu, and we did one pass where Sarah Jessica was wearing a blue dress and didn’t get splashed; instead, she trips when she sees the ad [of herself],” series creator Darren Star told Entertainment Weekly. “In my mind, it was a nod to The Dick Van Dyke Show, but we didn’t use it. It’s in the archives.”
