Luke Spencer has passed away! The bombshell news was revealed during the Monday, January 3rd episode of General Hospital (GH). Apparently, the iconic Port Charles character succumbed to injuries following a cable car accident in Austria.

Granted, this bombshell would’ve been much more powerful had actor Anthony Geary not left the show six years ago. After 44 years in and out of the role, Geary retired in 2015, telling TVInsider at the time, “I’m just weary of the grind and have been for 20 years.”

While the eight-time Daytime Emmy winner (and current record-holder for that tally) has since been living in Amsterdam, his character – despite a lengthy absence – remains highly popular among GH audiences.

Luke Spencer arrived on the Port Charles scene in 1978 and his pairing with Laura Webber (Genie Francis) resulted in super couple royalty. When Luke and Laura wed in 1981, the episode attracted 30 million viewers – a record for daytime drama.

So, despite Geary’s absence from the ABC soap in recent years, the news of Luke’s passing will be deeply felt by GH viewers. For some, it likely closes a chapter on the soap’s golden era.

However, Luke’s demise will likely spur on some new drama, as it appears his cable car accident may have been orchestrated. Is Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) to blame? Viewers will have to keep tuning in to ensure that their fallen character is avenged.
