Kathleen Turner Says She “Didn’t Feel Welcomed” By Friends Cast

It’s no surprise to fans that the cast of Friends were a tight-knit group while filming, and while that made for great chemistry on-screen, it also made it hard for guest stars according to Kathleen Turner.

Friends fans will remember Turner as one of the show’s most popular guest stars, portraying Chandler Bing’s father, Charles Bing/Helena Handbasket, and after more than 15 years the actress doesn’t have great things to say about being on set.

“I’ll be quite honest…I didn’t feel very welcomed by the cast,” she recalled to Vulture. “I remember I was wearing this difficult sequined gown—and my high heels were absolutely killing me. I found it odd that none of the actors thought to offer me a seat.”

Kathleen continued, “Finally it was one of the older crew members that said, ‘Get Miss Turner a chair.’ The Friends actors were such a clique—but I don’t think my experience with them was unique. I think it was simply that they were such a tight little group that nobody from the outside mattered.”

When asked what she thought about the core groups’ acting skills, Turner simply said she “wouldn’t comment” on that, adding, “Maybe if I’d had months to work with them, I’d be in a better position to evaluate their skill. But I could only judge based on the period I worked on the show, which wasn’t long,” she shared. “I do respect the camaraderie they had. You can see camaraderie on the screen. When I did Body Heat with Larry Kasdan and Bill Hurt, we rehearsed significantly before shooting and there was a familiarity before the camera rolled. You see it in the film.”
