Musicals have their origins in the theaters of Ancient Rome and the Middle Ages, and it’s obvious they are never going to go out of style. The best musicals are timeless, and induce audiences to sing and dance in their seats. There are many genres of musicals, for instance the dark and sinister dramas, such as Sweeney Todd and Les Miserables, which contrast with the upbeat and colourful comedies of Hairspray and Oklahoma. It may not be realistic for street gangs to dance ballet before a rumble, or a whole high school class to spontaneously break out into a choreographed dance number, but we wish they would.
