9. How They Met

Fergie and Josh met on the set of his former show, Las Vegas back in 2004 when Fergie’s former band, The Black Eyed Peas, made a guest appearance to perform. While on the Anderson Cooper show, Duhamel said that he first heard of his future wife while at a BBQ. Molly Sim’s boyfriend at the time showed him the music video for the song “Hey Mama” and said, “This girl shakes it like she wants a career.” From that moment on Duhamel was smitten. He went to work the next day and convinced producers to invite the band onto their show. Sure enough, the following year, The Black Eyed Peas were musical guests on Las Vegas. 8. Two Week Rule

Like many other Hollywood relationships, one of the biggest roadblocks they faced was time spent together. Josh is a successful actor who is constantly needed on set or on location, while Fergie is a singer who is on tour performing in different cities every night. In order to better manage this aspect of their relationship they had a strict two week rule. “We have a rule. We don’t go more than two weeks without seeing each other. If she is on tour, I will meet up with her, or if I am on a movie, she will come out to where I am filming. Like now, I am shooting in North Carolina, and she is staying with me for a week or two. When we were first together, we didn’t realize it is too difficult to go more than two weeks without being together. We want to stay tight. That is our number-one priority,” said Josh.

7. Time Together

One of the reasons that Fergie and Josh got along so well is the fact that they are both so down to earth and surprisingly normal! When they weren’t out on the road or working on set, they lived a pretty low key life. “We have our routine. Saturday nights we go to church and dinner afterward. We also like to take hikes and work out, and we even have certain TV shows that we like watching. We also love to cook. We are a lot more normal than people think,” said Duhamel.

6. Similar Values

In an interview with Allure, Fergie said her relationship with Josh worked out so well because they shared the same values when it comes to raising their 3-year-old son, Axl Jack. They’ve also been together through thick and thin and grown into their relationship together. “We just grew. And we grew into realizing that we wanted the same things in life. We wanted the same path. We both come from Catholic families.” These two seem to have found a happy balance in their relationship, especially when it comes to raising their son, Axl. “He’s great! He is present — wants to make it work, wants to be a good husband and a good father. He’s there for me, really there for me….We’ve already talked about how we’re going to have to trade off. He’s going to have to come on tour with Axl for a while, and then there’ll be a break. He’ll take a job; I’ll be on set with [Axl],” she said.

5. They’re Competitive

Fergie revealed in an interview with People that she and Josh can have a bit of a competitive banter. When they went go-karting for the Annual Cadillac Super Bowl Grand Prix, Josh, who was the reigning champion from the previous year, was talking a lot of smack to his then-girlfriend, Fergie. But she returned it right back! “I’m just hoping my natural abilities will come into fruition during the race. We get a little competitive sometimes. We had a lasagna cook-off one time and basically I was the better bluffer. He won the contest because mine ended up soggy,” she said.

4. They Do Romantic Things

Fergie has said that she and Josh kept things fresh in their relationship by doing “quirky romantic things” like going fishing or cooking together. They don’t wait for Valentine’s Day to come around in order to do things together. “Like we went to Cabo San Lucas, and we took a cooking class and we went fishing for marlin and mahi mahi. We sing karaoke. At his house, he has a karaoke machine. Sometimes we’ll sing really corny duets together when a couple of our friends are over. He does ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart,’ which is amazing. You’ve never seen anything like it. He gets into it. He’s pretty good. He’s better than you would think!” she said.

Back in 2009, Nicole Forrester, a dancer at a strip club, came forward and said she had a one night stand with Duhamel. Although he admitted that he was at the club that particular night, he denied all rumors of infidelity and little was said by either Fergie or Josh around that time. They both appeared on Oprah’s Next Chapter in 2012 and Fergie admitted that time in their relationship was “difficult.” When asked point blank about the rumors, she didn’t deny them, but also didn’t acknowledge that they were true: “When you go through difficult times, it really makes you stronger as a unit, as a partnership. It does for us, anyways. Our love today is a deeper love, definitely. We’re stronger today definitely because of anything difficult that’s happened with us. We deal with it, we communicate; communicating’s the most important thing.”

2. They Can Always Count On Each Other

Way before their split, in an interview with Marie Claire, Fergie made sure to point out that she knows she has a good man. “I’ve been in a lot of relationships that were exciting but unhealthy, very Sid-and-Nancy-esque. I wanted somebody I could count on. With all the craziness of this business, I know I can count on my man – and he knows he can count on me,” she said. In turn, during a Q&A with Women’s Health magazine, Josh said, “The secret to my relationship is that we genuinely like each other, and we both try to be thoughtful about what’s going on with the other person. Neither of us ever really feels alone.”

Josh and Fergie have almost accomplished something that is very rare in Hollywood. They got married, and stayed married! The couple got married on Jan. 10, 2009, but have been together since 2004. They had been together for nearly 13 years before their abrupt split in 2017! When asked how they make it work, Duhamel said, “You know, we still really really like each other. That’s important.” He’s also said that staying out of the spotlight really helps with their relationship. “We stay out of the spotlight as much as we can. So many times people are too in the spotlight, which puts too much pressure on things.”
