10 Things You Didn’t Know About Eva Mendes And Ryan Gosling’s Relationship

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are notorious for keeping their relationship private. From how they got together, to the birth of their children, the couple has kept their important life moments hidden from the media. We were curious to know more about the elusive couple, so here’s 10 things you might not know about their relationship.

10. How They Met

Ryan and Eva first met when they teamed up for the crime drama The Place Behind the Pines in 2011. By September, they were spotted getting cozy together while taking a break from filming. The couple went on a date to Disneyland and were spotted holding hands. In November, they took a romantic trip to Paris. The sightings of the couple created a lot of buzz about their relationship, but neither one of them would reveal any details.

9. Ellen

Even Ellen couldn’t get much info about Ryan and Eva’s relationship! In May 2012, Eva dropped by Ellen’s show, during which time the host tried to prod for details. When Ellen brought up Eva’s new beau, the actress grew bashful. In her usual fashion, Ellen wanted to give a little gift to Eva and Ryan. She teased Eva by saying that if the actress ever happened to run into Ryan, she should bring something fun, and had her crew bring out a couple of onesies that were attached to each other. In a later interview with USA Today, Eva explained why she didn’t like to discuss the relationship with the media. That’s the most precious thing to me. And I’m so protective and I just felt my guard go up.”

8. Meeting Mom

By the end of 2011, the couple’s relationship was serious, and Ryan wanted Eva to meet his family. The couple flew to Ontario, Canada, so Eva could meet Ryan’s mother. They rang in the New Year and caught a movie together. A few months later, the couple returned to Toronto to attend Ryan’s mother’s graduation at Brock University, where she graduated with a degree in education. The couple slipped into the ceremony and tried to be as discreet as possible. However, Ryan was so proud of his mother’s accomplishment that he couldn’t help but jump to his feet and clap when she received her degree! While they were in the area, Eva and Ryan squeezed in some sightseeing in Niagara Falls, Canada.

7. Secrecy

Despite public appearances with her beau, Eva has been adamant that the details of her relationship with Ryan stay hushed. In Lucky’s October 2013 issue, the actress bluntly told the interviewer that she had no intentions of discussing the personal details about her and Ryan’s relationship. “You can ask about my boyfriend. I just won’t answer.” Eva also admitted that the media aren’t the only ones she does’t reveal information to. She said her mother searches online in order to find out information about her daughter’s life.

6. She’s The One

Ryan also prefers to keep quiet about his relationship with Eva, but sometimes he can’t help but gush about her. In a rare moment, the actor opened up to Hello! magazine to tell them how happy he is in his relationship with the actress. “I know I’m with the person I’m supposed to be with,” he said. “There’s nothing else I’m looking for.”

5. Marriage

As far as we know, Ryan and Eva are not married (though with their secrecy, who really knows?!). The couple seems to be happy just as they are, and have not disclosed any details about their intentions to marry. This isn’t a big issue for Eva, as prior to her relationship with Ryan, she dated Peruvian-born filmmaker George Augusto for 10 years. Back then, Eva shared her feelings about marriage in an interview with The Telegraph. “If we go back to the origin of marriage, it was very unromantic,” she stated. “It was about land, basically. It was about ownership. So I think it’s a kind of unromantic idea. When I look around and see the emphasis people put on getting married and weddings, I think, wait a second, what does this really mean?”

4. Breakup Rumors

Throughout their relationship, the couple have been the target of breakup rumors. In 2014, reports claimed that Ryan’s ex, Rachel McAdams, was trying to wedge Eva out of the relationship. Eva’s representatives denied that the couple’s relationship was over. In 2015, the attention shifted onto Emma Stone, who was filming La La Land with Ryan. Emma was fresh out of her relationship with Andrew Garfield, and reports claimed she had her eyes set on Ryan. Eva’s reps once again denied that the couple were in trouble. Nothing came of the rumors, as the couple are still happily together.

3. Baby #1

In July 2014, the news broke that Eva was pregnant with Ryan’s baby. They were able to keep the news quiet for 7 months. Their daughter, Esmeralda Amada, was born on September 12, 2014. Like their relationship, Eva and Ryan are protective over the exposure of their daughter, and have shared limited information about her. A few months after giving birth, Eva revealed the meaning behind their daughter’s name. “Ryan and I both love the Esmeralda character from the Victor Hugo novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and we just think it’s a beautiful name,” she explained to Violet Grey magazine. “Amada was my grandmother’s name. It means ‘beloved’ in Spanish.”

2. Baby #2

When it came to having their second baby, Eva and Ryan were even more secretive than they were with their first. This time, the media didn’t catch the news until 1 month before the baby was born! The couple welcomed their second daughter Amada Lee on April 29, 2016. When asked how he was enjoying the new arrival of his daughter, Ryan joked, “It’s heaven. It’s like walking through a field of flowers every day. I live with angels.”

1. Strong Women

As the couple work hard to bring up their daughters, they are determined to have strong women in their lives. Speaking about her first pregnancy, Eva said she had the help from the women in her family. “Esmeralda has two amazing grandmothers and incredible aunties who come over and really help me,” she told Violet Grey. Ryan is also on board, and considering he’s the face of the feminist “Hey Girl” meme, this couldn’t be more fitting. “I grew up with strong women and the amount of them grows exponentially as time goes on, in my world,” he said in an interview prior to the birth of his second daughter. “It’s not a conscious thing. I didn’t make those [memes], you know? It’s not by design. But I do have a little girl now and it’s important to me.”
