Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield – or “Stonefield” as they were affectionately called – were one of Hollywood’s adorable couples. The two fell in love while playing romantic interests on camera, and had a relationship that paparazzi loved to follow. Although the couple kept much of their relationship private, we were interested to know more about how they got together, and why they split. Here’s 10 things you may not know about Emma and Andrew’s romance.

10. How They Met

Emma and Andrew met in 2010 when Emma came in to audition for a part in The Amazing Spider-Man. Andrew had already been cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and the director was looking for the film’s Gwen Stacey. Andrew recalled the fateful day that Emma came in to test for the role. “She was the last person to screen-test, and I was so bored of it by then. And then she came in, and it was like diving into whitewater rapids and having no desire to hang on to the side,” he recalled. The director, Marc Webb, took notice of the obvious chemistry between the two and knew Emma was the right choice for the part.

9. Love On The Set

The chemistry intensified on the set and by 2011 the two had become an item. Andrew said working with Emma was thrilling, and he couldn’t help but want to be around her all of the time. “Throughout shooting, it was wild and exciting. I couldn’t help but try to stay with her, keep pace with her and not let her get away,” Andrew recalled. The couple kept their relationship under wraps as both of them had recently ended long-term relationships. Prior to dating Andrew, Emma was in a relationship with Kieran Culkin. Andrew had recently ended his 3-year relationship with Raising Hope’s Shannon Woodward.

8. Camera Couple

By 2012, the couple’s relationship had reached the next level. The couple moved in to an apartment together in New York City and so began the paparazzi’s obsession with following the couple around the city on their daily outings. Emma and Andrew were continually photographed as they strolled the streets and frequented the coffee shops near their home.

7. Activism

In the hopes of using the publicity for a good cause, Andrew and Emma began raising awareness about the charities they supported. In September 2012, the couple walked out of a restaurant holding a couple of signs that read, “We just found out that there are paparazzi outside the restaurant we were eating in. So…why not take this opportunity to bring attention to organizations that need and deserve it? www.wwo.org & www.gildasclubnyc.org. Have a great day!” The couple did a similar thing in 2014 in order to raise the profile of the organizations Youth Mentoring and Autism Speaks. The couple also teamed up to assist with a gardening project at a school in Miami, and supported charity work with Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

6. Love Triangle

But like many Hollywood relationships, there was bound to be some sort of drama! During the filming of the second installation of The Amazing Spider-Man, things appeared to heat up between Andrew and one of his other cast mates. Actress Shailene Woodley was cast as the love interest Mary Jane Watson for Garfield’s character, Peter Parker, and the two were rumored to be flirting on the set. Adding to the speculation was a cryptic tweet that Emma Stone posted that read, “nawder nas islasehne tsintgi ni a erte.” Perez Hilton decoded the jumbled letters to reveal the hidden message: “Andrew and Shailene sitting in a tree.” Woodly’s part was later cut from the film, with the film’s director Marc Webb saying that the relationship between them [Peter and Gwen] is so sacred” that Woodley’s part didn’t fit with the rest of the film.

5. Break

Unlike the early days of their relationship, things grew complicated between Emma and Andrew as time went on. By April 2015, the couple decided to take a break from being together. Some sources said it was because they were having several fights, with others adding that their busy work schedules were also to blame. Emma was reported to have moved out of New York City to live in Los Angeles.

4. Too Method

There were also reports that Andrew was getting “too method” for his role in Martin Scorsese’s film Silence that was filmed in Taiwan. The couple struggled to keep the long distance relationship together, particularly since Andrew became too devoted to his work. An insider told Us Weekly, “He’d been in a dark place for months, getting into his role. He wasn’t being the best partner.” A separate source in People said, “He’s thrown himself into the project into the detriment of all else.”

3. Privacy

Despite all the attention, Emma tried to remove herself from all the speculation about her split from Andrew. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal Emma said, “I never talk about this stuff for this exact reason — because it’s all so speculative and baseless. I understand the interest in it completely, because I’ve had it, too. But it’s so special to me that it never feels good to talk about, so I just continually don’t talk about it.”

2. Split

A few weeks later, Emma and Andrew were spotted together in California where they were holding hands. Emma also met up with Andrew’s parents during a screening of her film Aloha. The relationship didn’t hold together for long though, as the two were confirmed to have split sometime near the end of summer of 2015. Andrew admitted that he was struggling after the breakup. “I am not OK,” he said in an interview with USA Today. “That feels really good to say to you. I’m really not all right. I’m in the struggle of being a person. I haven’t got anything figured out.”

1. Rumors

But for fans of Stonefield, there may still be some hope yet! In July 2016, there was word that the couple were getting back together. Reports claimed the two were seen on a yacht off the coast of the Mediterranean, and have been pursuing a relationship that’s out of the public eye. So perhaps they’re not over after all!
