Just the other day, People and Us Weekly reported that Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield are finished. They had been dating for four years and many of us really loved them as a couple. Now that it’s over, we’re looking back on the relationship and noticing that it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows with these two. There were actually some signs that they weren’t headed for a happily ever after. Here are 7 signs Emma and Andrew’s split was coming:

7. Relationship Overlap

Andrew and Emma met on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man when he was dating actress Shannon Woodward. There are rumors that there may have been an overlap because, during filming, Andrew stopped seeing Shannon and started spending more and more time with Emma.

A year after his breakup with Shannon, Andrew told MTV News that he fell for the Emma almost immediately. “We got on really well as people, in between [takes],” he said. “That was the fun stuff: In between, we’d just mess around and I felt, ‘Ah, this is different.’ I wasn’t really aware of what was happening in the screen test. She keeps you on your toes and that wakes you up. That was the beginning.”

6. Andrew’s Alleged “Thing” with Rashida Jones

Back in 2011, when Andrew was obviously dating Emma, he reportedly went on a date with Rashida Jones. A source told Star magazine, “I was so surprised to see them out together and sitting so close to each other. What’s more, the two only had eyes for each other, with Andrew, 28, hanging on Rashida’s every word and tenderly resting his hand on the small of her back as they left the eatery, says the eyewitness. There was some serious flirting going on. Rashida seemed excited to be with him.”

5. Emma Does the Awards Campaign Alone

Emma Stone was up for a number of different awards this year for her role in Birdman. She received nominations from the Golden Globes, the Oscars, the Screen Actors Guild and the British Academy of Film and Television. When she was walking all of those red carpets, Andrew was nowhere to be seen, which got people wondering if they were still together and, if so, why he wasn’t with her.

4. Rumored Breakup Spring 2015

This past April, Star magazine was the first one to break the news that Andrew and Emma were on a break. Sources said that they had hit a rough patch and, with Andrew filming in Taiwan, they had decided to take “some time apart to figure things out.” Soon after, People confirmed the breakup and Us Weekly reported that Andrew’s “intense commitment to his role as a 17th-century Jesuit in director Martin Scorsese’s upcoming movie Silence” is what ended the relationship: “He’d been in a dark place for months, getting into his role,” a second insider said. “He wasn’t being the best partner.”

3. Andrew’s Rumored Affair

After it was confirmed that Andrew and Emma were dunzo, Star magazine reported that Emma was the one who did the dumping and it was because he had a one night stand with a girl he met at a bar while he was filming Silence in Taiwan. According to the source, Andrew was desperate for another shot with Emma, but she felt that him cheating “shows just how much they needed a break.”

2. Andrew’s Angst

In interviews, Emma seems like such a darling. Andrew, however, seems to have some angst. When he discussed his role in the Spider-Man movies, this became especially evident.

“The pressure to get it right, to please everyone… it’s not going to happen…You end up pleasing no one, or everyone just a little bit. Like, ‘Eh, that was good.’ [The films are] mass-marketed, like ‘We want 50-year-old white men to love it, gay teenagers to love it, bigot homophobes in Middle America to love it, 11-year-old girls to love it.’ That’s canning Coke,” he told IndieWire. “So that aspect of it was a bummer. Especially for the group of us trying to infuse it with soul, trying to make it unique, something that was worth the price of entry…I understand people want to make a lot of money, and they’re going to spend a lot of money so the playpen can be as big as it was. I can’t live that way; it sounds like a prison, to be honest, living within those expectations.”

1. Emma’s Shining Star

While Andrew seems a little lost in his head sometimes, Emma comes off as being fun, relatable and totally loveable. She was also the bigger star in the relationship. This year, she received her first Oscar nomination for her role in Birdman. She didn’t win, but we wouldn’t be surprised if there were more nominations and possibly a win in her future. It must have been hard for Andrew being with someone as successful as Emma. He takes his craft really seriously, but she seems to experience way more success than him.
