10 Most Overrated Singers of the 2000s

The word “overrated” is defined as “having a higher opinion of someone or something than is deserved.” There’s no denying that the following musicians are popular and successful (their record sales and Twitter followers, as shown below, prove how popular they are) but does their talent match the level of success they’ve achieved? We’ll leave that up to you to decide….

10. Avril Lavigne

Avril was as much affected by punk rock as she was by her encouraging parents, and Avril’s mall and skateboard videos reach scores of kids.  Along the way, she’s sold 18 million records and collected over 12 million followers on Twitter. She sells out over 85 percent of her concerts and grosses over four million dollars in concert revenue alone. So, is Avril overrated? Some point to her big hit, “Complicated” and say she’s basically a one-hit wonder.

You are comparing Michael Jackson with Justin Beiber? Who are you people?

  2. Matt Storage

Michael Jackson, Lady GaGa, Madonna, Mariah Carey? Are you taking the absolute piss?

  3. Matt Storage

    September 27, 2013 at 1:05 pm

And comparing Lady GaGa, who has a vocal range similar to Adele (look it up), to Britney Spears’ vocals??? Trololololol.

For the people who are complaining about the article it says overated singers. These people are not singers they are artists, these people cannot sing, actually listen/watch them live, they either sound terrible or its lip synced.

Spears has a soprano which is the highest vocal range of all voice types

  6. Malcolm Agius

    October 13, 2013 at 3:45 pm

If they are gonna have to dance than they have to lipsync. If they don’t than singing won’t be that great. Singers are humans too thus they need to breathe.

actually adeles vocal range isn’t that large and britney spans across 3 octaves gaga just under that and adele a little over 2 octaves. adele’s voice surpasses range, her tone and emotion are so powerful they effect people in a really big way and her mastery over her diction and the quirks in her voice are the kinds of things that make her such a spectacular singer if you want an impressive vocal range then look to mariah (5 octaves) or christina aguilera (4 octaves). but yeah having said that britney can go higher and lower than gaga besides singing isn’t all about range.

this is stupid Justin Bieber is not ‘overrated’ he deserves to be where he is he worked hard for that, how does having a lot of twitter followers and has a lot of record sales make him overrated

  9. greyfox26

    November 13, 2013 at 3:49 pm

Justin Bieber does not have what it takes to be a top rated performer. He has come to believe his own publicity an because of it, he can do no wrong. Wrong Justin, the people who pay to see and hear you will slowly become bored with your high and mighty antics and the ticket sales will trickle below their ability to pay expenses. You will then find yourself playing birthday parties at chukie cheese, My prediction: Within three years you will be known as…. Justin Who?

Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift should be on this list…they are both definitely over rated!!

Miley, yes, Taylor Swift, no. Taylor is an amazing songwriter

Mariah has 5 Grammy wins and is respected for her vocal talent. She has shown her talent with enough live performances that it isn’t a issue. Whoever wrote this laughable article is spending way too much reading the latest gossip on TMZ on not concentrating on music! Justin Bieber is growing up and his music is maturing and his talent is coming to the surface now that he is being allowed to make the music he wanted instead of bubble gum pop music that some other people still know him by. Music Mondays has set the buzz that something big is coming from him with his new album next year. He is also gaining respect from R&B fans with his new music and gaining new mature fans. As well he is getting the best music critic reviews of his career. He can’t be the same 15 yr old that sang ‘Baby’ 4 years ago forever. The buzz he is creating is around the quality of his new music from critics and new mature fans of his is setting the transition to more mature music and audiences. The buzz is that he is a strong contender for the next big thing in R&B.

On Avril Lavigne… How does having 5 top 10 hits make you a “one hit wonder”? No wonder I’ve never heard of this website.

  20. Amanda

    January 5, 2014 at 5:14 am

Ok, so let me get this straight…. Michael Jackson is on this list but, much more deserving over-rated douches like, Eminem, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and, Justin Timberlake aren’t??? Ummm… Ok. I just have one question, though…

Are you people out of your f’ing minds?!!!!

  21. Amanda

    January 5, 2014 at 5:24 am

If he’s a “contender for the next big thing in R&B” then, America music truly dead! R&B is becoming increasingly obsolete because idiots like Beiber, Timberlake and, Cyrus are being called R&B.

voice don’t sell music image is more important. You can go on any block in Brooklyn and find 10 out of 10 singers with excellent voice ,but is any of them a star. You cannot be a pop artist with just voice and no personality. I will sign a star over a singer any day . singers are easy to find stars are born once in every generation.
If you have a label I hope you sign singers and see how quick you go bankrupt
    Rihanna is a star.

Wow, already this article is nonsense. Avril is one of the most talented and original songwriters of the last decade. Her 2nd and 3rd albums were gold. One hit wonder? Try 20 hit wonder dumb@ss

  24. liam

    January 7, 2014 at 12:04 am

I think I’m in the wrong place but how can you say “best songwriters”? She is just a famous pop star. The best songwriters of the 2000’s were actual musicians like radiohead, elliott smith, coldplay,p.j harvey, beck, white stripes and arcade fire, etc not just chicks with boobs that can sing high

  25. Riley Scott

    January 7, 2014 at 11:15 pm

Avril Lavigne is overrated?! BS. I’m not even bothering to waste my time on the rest of your stupid article. It’s one thing to say that someone like Justin Beiber’s fame is overrated since his fame doesn’t coincide with his singing abilities; insulting singers who are good, just b/c you personally don’t like these singers is another thing entirely. Stop trying to pass these opinions off as that of the general public. What a load of crap.

  26. Alex Temara

    January 9, 2014 at 10:48 am

What a dumb article. Mariah Carey? Seriously. She’s pretty much the inspiration for a generation of female pop/R&B vocalists. The article should be renamed ’10-famous-singers-who-I-as-a-nobody-personally-don’t-like’.

  27. Alex Mac Dougall

    January 11, 2014 at 11:01 am

  28. Amanda Kevins

gagas vocal capabilities are greater than every artist on this list combined, and then some. hate on her clothes and songs all you want, but youtube her on howard stern and then talk about her vocal capabilities

  29. Blombiddyshob

    January 30, 2014 at 12:26 am

Rihanna should be #1 on the list of crap. Every time I hear her music, I have to think about a certain event in order to keep my good mood.

  30. Cal

    January 30, 2014 at 1:50 am

If anything Mariah Carey has been underrated in the 2000’s, not overrated….. You are rightly dismissed.

    January 31, 2014 at 11:52 am

    Britney has a terrible voice.

    January 31, 2014 at 11:57 am

Lady Gaga may be a bit over publicised, but her talent is overshadowed by her outfits and videos. She can play the piano, she writes all her music and she actually has an amazing voice. So why you’d compare her vocals to Britney is beyond me. She is entirely inspired by Madonna, Britney, David Bowie, Queen etc… which she has never denied, but admitted. She puts a lot of effort into her style and her music videos as well. It’s unfair for you to imply that she’s somehow “overrated”. You can’t call every Pop star that has made it big overrated simply because they’re in the media a lot.

Michael Jackson is overrated?????? That is about the most hilarious thing I have ever heard. He is the pioneer of modern day pop music. Even the fact you include a musical genius on the same list as a bubble gum nobody like Justin beiber is a gross injustice to his legacy…

    February 13, 2014 at 4:08 am

This article is silly. The titles suggest that they’re on this list because of their singing abilities (or lack thereof). But you rate some of these singers as overrated because of some of their personality flaws or because of the bad choices they’ve made in their lives. Yes, Mariah is a diva, but that girl can SING! Michael Jackson is a musical genius. I’m not a Lady Gaga fan, but I do think she can sing, as well as play piano and write her own music. Mariah, Avril, Lady Gaga, and Michael shouldn’t be on this list. The rest of them? Well………… :-p

    March 10, 2014 at 10:39 am

Well yeah, voice wise Taylor does not have the strongest voice but her talent is in songwriting and telling stories through lyrics and I think that does match the level of success she’s achieved, so I don’t think she’s overrated.

  37. pat10

    April 14, 2014 at 2:37 pm

Yes, her talent is overshadowed by her outfits & videos, that is to draw attention Away from her so-so voice.

JB only got his foot in the music industry b/c someone showed his little YT video to Usher & asked him to show it to LAReid, otherwise he’d still be in Canada (where he belongs, sorry Canada) making little YT videos with his friends. His ‘millions’ of twitter followers consist of millions of grade school & middle school girls, plus A LOT of them having 2 or 3 different twitter accounts with different names.
Personally if I had a young daughter, once the shirt started coming off and his ‘better than most’ mentality came out so far he started getting in trouble with the law, well then my daughter would very quickly be steered to someone else.
That arrogant, vulgar, spoiled brat needs knocked down some rungs- it’s a shame his parents can’t seem to see past his money.
He is fading, just like we all said he would, even the Grammy’s, etc. aren’t acknowledging him any longer. Says it all Maria.
He is the epitome of “overrated” dear. ( plus he even said at the start that he wanted to be like Michael Jackson…he is SO far Out of MJ’s League it’s ridiculous.MJ’s a Legend-one of greatest Entertainers, video makers, song writers,& businessmen in his time for decades.)
What I want to know is where is YOUR parents that let you idolize this faux celebrity with all the skin he shows & trouble he is?!

  39. pat10

    April 14, 2014 at 3:07 pm

SRSLY?! “A strong contender”, almost made me spit out my coffee on that one. He has fallen so far that the Grammy’s didn’t even acknowledge him this year, not even to perform. The ‘mature’ audiences will Never take that spoiled wannabe seriously, they never have.

I don;t where you’re getting your info, but he’s busy sabotaging his career, he has no other time.
    Now get to school.

Curious how no 1 person is taking ‘credit’ for this article. Just “by fame10 staff”. Exactly how old is the ‘fame10staff’? B/C it seems that, excluding that twerp Beiber, all you so-called overrated list are singers, songwriters, entertainers, that are already established in the music industry with many nods & awards.
Where are your Cyrus’, etc., that our kids are being subjected to now?
Get a grown up to write your next article, unless of course the whole dam fame10 is run and employed by children, then we’ll just ignore you until you’re all grown & see the dumb choices you’ve made. Don’t worry, we’ve all done it, you’ll all grow out if it too, hopefully!
