In a special event at the end of October last year, Marvel made a big announcement regarding their plans for “Phase 3” of their film franchise (Phase 2 will end this year with Ant-Man). We now know exactly which movies the studio will be releasing through to 2020. Although confirming the titles of their movies this early has killed a bit of the excitement that comes with speculating on a studio’s next moves, Marvel made a shrewd choice in revealing their hand early, as it’s given fans a lot to ponder in the meantime. 5 years is a long time in the entertainment world and the Marvel universe of today is going to look a lot different once Phase 3 reaches its endpoint. The titles of the films have been revealed, but just what is going on in the Marvel universe over the next 5 years?
10. Who will direct Avengers 3?
Joss Whedon has gone on record stating that he will not be returning to direct Avengers: Infinity War, begging the question of who will inherit the biggest title in Marvel’s impressive stable. In the infamous Sony email hack back in November, it was revealed that Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the upcoming Civil War, are set to helm Infinity War, but Marvel has not actually confirmed this news. The Russo brothers would be a great fit given how well Winter Soldier turned out, but it would be nice to see Marvel outsource the big job to an outside talent. Unfortunately, given their rather negative reputation as a studio that doesn’t always play nice with more creatively-outspoken talent (just ask Edgar Wright), this is a highly doubtful prospect. Look for Marvel to play it safe with directing duties on Avengers 3.
