Reality competition shows have multiplied and dominated prime time TV programming for several years now, all brought to the foreground by American Idol which began back in 2002.
Although there seems to be a decline in the interest of shows like American Idol, there are some still going strong and one of those is The Voice which will be entering its eighth season on February 23.
While a big draw of The Voice is its star studded coaching panel including Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams, going into its eighth season run many have noticed it has failed to produce any huge recording artists like American Idol did in its first few seasons with Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson.
Now the coaches are speaking out about their lack of so-called stars and reveal that, while that would be great, it isn’t the only point of the show.
“We want to have that happen. It is hard to do that…Being successful is really, really difficult. A lot of things have to come together at the right moment for that to happen…It’s going to happen. I genuinely believe that,” Levine told FOX411.
Meanwhile Aguilera spoke out about her own experience on Star Search in 1990, “Every big celebrity I know today that went on that show didn’t win, you still get a second chance. After ‘Star Search,’ I wasn’t handed a record deal… That took years after that show aired and I lost, to then make a career out of the rest of my life.”
Pharrell Williams explained that the show has bigger meaning for contestants, “The show is not about someone signing a record deal. The show is about a bunch of people who really care about people that they encounter, and make sure that they’re changed when they walk off,” he stated.
“[The contestants] go home different people, because they’ve had tutors that they would never in a million years probably have met, let alone get singing lessons from Adam Levine, or learn how to control your vibrato from Christina Aguilera, or learn how to put more heart and soul into your performance, like Blake Shelton.”
