Anthony Hopkins had a record-breaking win at last night’s 2021 Academy Awards!
The 83-year-old made history by becoming the oldest star to win an Academy Award in the Best Actor category. He was given the honor for his starring role in The Father. He previously broke another record when he became the oldest Best Actor nominee when the 2021 Oscar nominations were announced back in March.
The 2021 Academy Awards marked Hopkins’ sixth time being nominated for an Oscar. He was nominated this year alongside Gary Oldman (Mank), Steven Yeun (Minari), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), and Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom).
Hopkins was actually not in attendance at the Oscars, however presenter Joaquin Phoneix, who won the category last year for his leading role in Joker, accepted the award on his behalf.
Hopkins played the role of Anthony in The Father, an 80-year old man grappling with a deteriorating mental state and dementia. He rejects the carers that his daughter introduces to him and his conflicting memories and confusion begin to affect his identity and family life.
