Alec Baldwin accidentally misfired a prop gun on the New Mexico set of Rust that tragically led to the fatality of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and seriously injured director Joel Souza.

According to the Santa Fe Sheriff Department, authorities arrived on the scene of the incident at the Bonanza Creek Ranch at around 1:50pm local time in response to 911 calls explaining that “an individual had been shot on set.” Upon investigation, the team discovered that Hutchins and Souza were “shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer and actor.”

Following the incident, Hutchins was reportedly airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she passed from her injuries. Souza has reportedly been undergoing treatment for his injuries at Christus St. Vincent’s hospital.

No charges have been filed so far, however the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

The film’s production company, Rust Movie Productions LLC, also released a statement acknowledging the event and sending their condolences. “The entire cast and crew has been absolutely devastated by today’s tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Halyna’s family and loved ones,” the company shared.

“We have halted production on the film for an undetermined period of time and are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department’s investigation. We will be providing counseling services to everyone connected to the film as we work to process this awful event.”
