9 Celebrities Who Admit to Struggling With Alcohol and Drugs!

It takes a lot of guts for celebrities to open up and admit that they have problems with alcohol or drugs, but these celebrities bucked up and did it! All of these celebrities addressed their issues and are currently leading more fulfilling lives as a result. Check out these 9 celebrities who struggled with alcohol/drug abuse and have been comfortable enough to talk about it!

9. Fergie

When Fergie was performing with Wild Orchid, she developed an addiction to crystal meth. This addiction followed her even after she left the group in 2001. “I got into a scene. I started going out and taking ecstasy. From ecstasy it went to crystal meth. With any drugs, everything is great at the beginning, and then slowly your life starts to spiral down. [I was] 90 pounds at one point.” Although it wasn’t easy, Fergie kicked her addiction and she has been sober since!

8. Jodie Sweetin

Jodie Sweetin – who starred as the lovely little Stephanie Tanner in “Full House” – has been battling alcohol and meth addiction on and off for more than a decade. She even has a book about called “unSweetined” that details her struggles. These days Sweetin is working as a Clinical Logistics Coordinator at an L.A. rehab centre.

7. Kelly Preston

Kelly Preston gave up smoking, drugs and drinking to be a better wife and mother and she has been enjoying the sober life since! “Now I don’t drink anymore. I don’t smoke anymore. I don’t do drugs anymore. I used to do everything and a lot of everything. With drinking, I just decided that I wasn’t always at my best. There were times where I drank too much, for sure,” Preston said.

6. Matthew Perry

When Matthew Perry starred on “Friends,” he was heavily addicted to prescription drugs and alcohol. Prescription drugs became a problem after a jet-ski accident in 1997. “I felt better than I ever felt in my entire life. I had a big problem with pills and alcohol, and I couldn’t stop,” Perry said. Before he had landed on Friends, Perry had already been addicted to alcohol. He is currently sober and he helps others battle the disease.

5. Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp quit drinking almost two year ago. When discussing his relationship with alcohol, he used the word “self-medicate.” “I don’t have the physical need for the drug alcohol. No, it’s more my medication, my self-medication over the years to calm the circus. Once the circus kicks in, the festivities in the brain, it can be ruthless,” Depp said.

4. Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor battled an alcohol addiction. “Originally I was a happy drunk. But later I was miserable because it’s a depressant,” McGregor said. Although he remembers the days when he used to booze fondly, McGregor has been sober for 13 years and counting.

3. Gary Oldman

Gary Oldman struggled with alcoholism until he went to rehab in 1994. When Oldman used to party, he partied hard. “I’d check into a hotel even if I lived 2 blocks from it. I’d get a suite, but because I couldn’t have people downstairs thinking I was an alcoholic, I would take all the glasses and leave little bits in them. I would get ashtrays and puff all the cushions up and turn the TV up. I’d order a bottle of wine, vodka and tonics and beer for all these imaginary people at this fake party, sign for it and proceed to drink it all,” Oldman said.

2. Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne battled an addiction to prescription drugs, which got out of hand after her mother was diagnosed with colon cancer and then again when her father was involved in a bike accident. “I was trying to be strong, so I took Vicodin to hide the terrible sadness. I was waking up and emptying six Vicodin into my hand. Soon I was taking 50 pills a day. Most people would overdose on 10,” Osbourne said. She kicked that habit and she has been clean since 2009!

1. Jason Bateman

Jason Batemen, a child actor who rose to fame on “Silver Spoons” and “The Hogan Family” used to struggle with drugs and alcohol. “It was like Risky Business for 10 years. My parents were out of town, they left me a bunch of money, the car, and the house, and I didn’t know when they were coming home. I’d worked so hard that by the time I was 20, I wanted to play hard,” Bateman said. Although it took some time and an ultimatum from his wife, Batemen cleaned up.
