9 Celebrities Whose Families Sold Them Out To The Press

Celebrities don’t always have it super easy. Once they’ve achieved a certain level of fame, people want to know more and more about them, which can be disastrous when the people they are closest to decide to sell them out for a quick paycheck. The same goes for celebrities who find themselves in the middle of a big scandal – magazines will do anything for information, which means trouble for some stars who have  disloyal family members or friends. Check out our list of celebrities who have been sold out by the people closest to them – their family members. While some have gone to the press for a check, others have written scathing tell-all books. Who can you trust if you can’t trust your family?

9. Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie and her father Jon Voight were estranged for nearly a decade after he told Access Hollywood that she needed help for her “serious mental problems.” This caused a major rift between the two. The Academy Award-winning actress had been in the process of adopting Maddox and, according to her, his accusations could have adversely affected the adoption process. Although Jolie and Voight have made strides in recent years to get past the feud, they are still anything but close.

8. Kendra Wilkinson

Kendra Wilkinson and her mom Patti have a pretty dysfunctional relationship. These two have been sparring on an on-off basis for almost a year and Patti has used the press to air her grievances with her daughter. She recently went to Star magazine to give a tell-all interview about their current feud. According to Patti, her daughter’s main focus is her reality show “Kendra on Top” and ensuring that the show gets good ratings. Her mother isn’t even sure that Hank Baskett’s affair with a transsexual model is real. She thinks it might have been a ploy to get people to watch their show!

7. Mia Farrow

One of the boys who Mia Farrow adopted with Woody Allen sold her out to the press earlier this year. Moses accused his mother of poisoning her children against the director-screenwriter. “My mother drummed it into me to hate my father for tearing apart the family and sexually molesting my sister,” Moses told People magazine. “And I hated him for her for years. I see now that this was a vengeful way to pay him back for falling in love with Soon-Yi,” he said. The whole situation sounds pretty dysfunctional, especially considering that Allen was like a father figure to Soon-Yi, who was still a teenager when they hooked up.

6. Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan’s father Michael has been selling her out to the press since she first shot to fame as a Disney star and he’s never really stopped. Last year, he told the UK’s Sun newspaper that Lindsay first began using drugs in 2005 when she was shooting “Just My Luck.” Michael didn’t stop there. He also told the Sun that the former child was still using Adderall and vodka and that he wasn’t sure that she was capable of overcoming her problems and staying sober. Looking at Lindsay’s father, we suppose it’s easy to see why she has so many problems.

5. Reese Witherspoon

After Reese Witherspoon was arrested for disorderly conduct last year, her stepmother decided that it was time to cash in. Even though she had never met the Academy Award-winning actress, Tricianne Taylor-Witherspoon tried to sell a tell-all about her stepdaughter and how she destroyed their family for an asking price of $100,000. She claims that Reese isn’t the sweet girl next door and that she doesn’t treat her father with much respect. The whole situation sounds pretty sketchy, especially considering that Reese’s father is suffering from early onset dementia and married Tricianne while he was still married to her mother.

4. Rihanna

Rihanna is another star who hasn’t had an easy relationship with her father. She told Vogue magazine that she felt betrayed by him when he went to the press following the Chris Brown assault in 2009. To make matters worse, he didn’t even reach out to her after the incident. “He never called to find out how I was doing, if I was alive, nothing. He just never called. He went straight to the press and got a check,” the singer said. Wow, that is anything but cool.

3. Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston has had a really difficult relationship with her mother Nancy Dow. While some of this definitely stems back to her childhood, her mother has been more of a frenemy to the Golden Globe-winning actress since she first catapulted to fame thanks to her role in the hit sitcom “Friends.” In 1997, Dow gave a television interview about her relationship with her daughter and she later wrote a revealing book about their problems, absolving herself of any blame. Yikes – that sounds like a  pretty toxic mother-daughter relationship!

2. Madonna

Madonna’s brother’s Christopher Ciccone released a scathing tell-all book about his relationship with his very famous sister. The portrait he painted of her was anything but flattering. He mentioned her drug use from years past, as well as the psychological abuse he endured as a member of her entourage. While the book revealed more about Christopher than Madonna, it wasn’t released at a good time for the superstar. Madonna and Guy Ritchie were in the process of trying to quietly split and the tell-all made their relationship look as though it was doomed from the beginning.

1. Jude Law

One of Jude Law’s close family members had leaked information on the actor to the magazine News of the World for money. During Britain’s phone hacking trial, the Academy Award-nominated actor testified against the magazine, claiming that he suspected that something was up because the press had an “unhealthy amount” of information about his private life. Even when he made secret arrangements to go somewhere, the press would know about it and be there ready with cameras. With family members like that, who needs enemies!
