Sometimes the people we envy most aren’t happy with their seemingly perfect lives. We seem to forget that celebrities are human and they struggle with dark moments just like everyone else. Here is a list of 12 celebrities who have survived suicide attempts!

12. Elton John

Elton John was having some serious doubts about his looming marriage in 1975, which lead him to attempt suicide by putting his head in a gas oven. His song “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” was about the attempt.

11. Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor attempted suicide in 1962. She was married to Eddie Fisher at the time and began a public affair with Richard Burton, which ended up driving her to despair. Two years later, Taylor and Burton divorced their respective partners and married each other.

10. Jack Osbourne

Jack Osbourne battled severe depression after he found out this his mother had been diagnosed with colon cancer in 2002, so he tried to take his own life by overdosing on OxyContin and Valium. In the spring of 2003, he finally sought professional help to assist him in overcoming his depression.

9. Sinead O’Connor

Sinead O’Connor – who has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder – has attempted suicide twice, once in 1999 and in 2012. The singer has had her fair share of struggles and, following her most recent suicide attempt, she took to Twitter to ask for help finding a psychiatrist because she was out of her medication.

8. Drew Carey

Drew Carey was so depressed through his late teens and twenties that he attempted to take his own life on two separate occasions. The host of “The Price is Right” overcame his depression. “I learned how to believe in myself. Learned how to set goals, you know, self help books, man. I just read every single one I can get a hold of and I still do. I read that stuff all the time still. I am always coming out bigger, better, stronger and happier.”

7. Paris Jackson

Paris Jackson reportedly tried to commit suicide in June 2013 by downing pills and slashing her wrist with a kitchen knife. The teen was said to be suffering from depression and was missing her father Michael Jackson deeply. Following her suicide attempt, she went to stay at a therapeutic boarding school.

6. Alexa Ray Joel

Alexa Ray Joel – daughter of model Christie Brinkley and musician Billy Joel – tried to commit suicide in 2009. The aspiring singer was having a hard time dealing with a bad breakup and took an excessive quantity of Traumeel, a homeopathic alternative to ibuprofen. Thankfully she is back and track and still performing.

5. Eminem

In 1996, Eminem reportedly tried to commit suicide after his wife Kim Mathers left him. Fearing he would not be able to see his daughter Hailie, he consumed an entire bottle of Tylenol.

4. Owen Wilson

In 2007, Owen Wilson reportedly attempted suicide by slashing his wrists and taking an overdose of pills. He allegedly was rushed to the hospital where he underwent detox for the pill overdose and surgery to his injured left wrist. Reports say the suicide attempt came after a vicious quarrel with a friend.

3. Halle Berry

Halle Berry has admitted that she tried to commit suicide after her first marriage failed. She tried to gas herself, but decided against it at the last minute. “I was sitting in my car, and I knew the gas was coming when I had an image of my mother finding me,” the Oscar-winning actress said.

2. Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore’s hard partying landed her in rehab when she was only 14. After leaving rehab, she attempted suicide, which landed her in rehab again. When she was released, she went to live with singer David Crosby and his wife because she needed to be around people who were “committed to sobriety.” In spite of her early struggles, Barrymore has gone on to have a successful acting career in Hollywood.

1. Billy Joel

Before Billy Joel became a famous musician, he swallowed furniture polish in a bid to kill himself. “I was suicidal. I was 21. It’s a tough age. Things hit you really hard. A relationship with a girl had ended and I was devastated, and then it didn’t work out with the recording we did, and I just figured the world didn’t need another failed musician,” Joel told Details magazine.
