This year’s 2020 BAFTAs will go down in history for one very special reason.

The annual event took a sustainable route and guests were given instructions on how to attend the event in the most eco-friendly way possible. Before even stepping foot in Royal Albert Hall, guidelines were sent out on how celebrities could minimize their carbon footprint. The guidelines included everything from planning eco-friendly travel arrangements to offering a plant based-menu for attendees.

The most intriguing rules of the evening, however, were the rules around a sustainable dress code. A sustainable fashion overview created by the London College of Fashion’s Centre was given to each attendee which was complete with a list of pre-approved brands, resellers, and rental options for red carpet looks. None of these rules were mandatory, but attendees were strongly encouraged to repeat existing pieces in their wardrobe or seek out sustainable brands.

Most notably, Duchess Kate Middleton followed the guidelines and repeated an Alexander McQueen dress she wore in 2012 while on tour in Malaysia.

Other stars who followed the sustainable guidelines included Saoirse Ronan who opted for a Gucci dress that repurposed discarded satin fabric. Daisy Ridley also followed suit in her floating Oscar de la Renta dress which was made with sustainability sourced fabric.
