All too often it is probably assumed celebrities have no reason to be unhappy. They’re famous, beautiful and wealthy after all, but as fans we have to remember they really are just like us.

In a recent interview with Glamour magazine, actress Reese Witherspoon, 38, reminded us of that when she openly discussed her own relationships, friendships and struggles.

Although Witherspoon never directly mentions ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, her responses indicate their marriage and subsequent divorce in 2007 took quite the toll on the her.

“I don’t think I realized [in my twenties] that no one else makes you whole. You have to take responsibility for your own happiness. That took me until I was about 31 to know. It wasn’t easy to realize, ‘Oh wait, I am purely responsible [for my life]’, no relationship, no children, no nothing is going to make you a happy person. Every day you have to choose to find out and cultivate your own happiness,” she explained.

While she says happiness doesn’t come from anywhere else but yourself, she also credits her husband Jim Toth for helping her get there.

“I have to say a very healing part of my life is my wonderful husband, Jim. It’s really wonderful being with somebody who supports me, who loves me, who is my number one fan. That is such an incredible experience.”

She continues, “I am so, so lucky to have girlfriends who, when I was on the floor crying, upset about things that happened in my life, came over, stood me up, put me in the shower, put my clothes on, took my kids to school, brought me dinner. You know? I love my girlfriends, and I protect those relationships fiercely,” Witherspoon revealed.

Reese and Ryan married in 1999 when she was 23 years old and had two children, Ava born in 1999 and Deacon born in 2003.

The pair then went through a messy divorce in 2007 and she began dating Jim Toth in 2010 before they married in 2011. They then welcomed their own son Tennessee in 2012.

Witherspoon is creating a lot of buzz for her performance in Wild, based on the journey of a drug addict trying to turn over a new leaf.
