Last week, famed Olympian Michael Phelps found himself in trouble yet again after getting pulled over for speeding in the early hours of the morning and was found to be under the influence of alcohol.
Ten years ago Phelps was charged with his first DUI and avoided conviction by being sentenced to 18 months probation and a fine. While it has been a long time since his first DUI, in 2009 a photo appeared that seemed to show Phelps smoking marijuana, and he admitted the photo was real.
After his latest DUI, in which his blood alcohol content was well above the legal limit and occurred after a night of gambling, Phelps says he is entering a six-week in-patient program to address his problems, “I am extremely disappointed with myself. I’m going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself”, the swimmer stated.
After his record 18 gold medals at the 2012 Olympic Games, Phelps retired from swimming, but decided to return this year by competing again in hopes of making the 2016 Rio Games. However, after this DUI his plans have been put on hold, “Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future.”
Phelps’ trial is scheduled for November 19 and he could face up to a year in jail, a hefty fine and the loss of his driver’s licence.
