Dare I say it: This episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians is socially relevant.
I feel so dirty having to admit that, so let’s cut to the chase, shall we? It’s no secret that the vast majority of the KUWTK episodes are full of more crap than a pigpen. Still, the conversation shared between Kim and Kris on the newest episode of the too-long-running series strikes a nerve, and pushes the hot button of the early 21st century. Gender identity. In particular, Bruce Jenner’s transition to live life as a woman.
Kris is struggling with her ex-husband’s transition, in part because she feels it invalidates the 20-plus years they spent together as a couple. Kim did her best to alleviate her mother’s pain–the fears that their life together was all for show. Kim offered the take she could gather from her own perspective. Sure, it was a little shallow, and lacking any true depth but let’s be true to the source, shall we?
The crazy thing about the Bruce Jenner transition is that it would have been major news regardless of the KUWTK connection. Would it have been as big a bombshell if he and Kris hadn’t been married for so many years, and appeared in a reality show together? Probably not… though it would have been more shocking, and more people would have been interested in the story. Bruce Jenner, former Olympic Champion… where has he been for the last 20 years? Oh, he’s gonna become a woman to live out his remaining days. That would have been a more interesting story. But I’m digressing…
As it stands, Kris can’t separate herself from feeling somewhat duped. As she suggested on-air, she felt like she can’t confidently say that all of those things they experienced were real.
