There may be people who have a problem with this headline, and to those people, the following are recommended: Vicky Cristina Barcelona; Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes); and the ridiculously silly Bandidas.

Those recommendations are three films that may sway your opinion, and understanding of just how irresistible the charm of Penelope Cruz actually is. Sure, you’ll get wonderful glances of sexiness as well, but sexiness without charm is sexiless. There are plenty of women this title could have gone to, but oh, how it would have really only gone to their head.

Esquire hit the nail on the head when it came to placing this silly title on the personage known as Penelope Cruz. She understands how silly it is, but at that, she’s honored to be recognized by the publication, especially at age 40. And through exquisitely written word, it becomes more and more obvious why Penelope Cruz was the easy and obvious choice for the magazine.

Sure, Penelope has been the topic of much debate over the years regarding cosmetic procedures, and using fillers. These days, one can never really tell if something is reality, or an altered reality. So, in the spirit of fairness: Play on Penelope.

For the rest of us, what does this mean? Well, it’s nice to see someone in her 40s being considered for this title over the rash of 20 year old women who are usually tapped for these covers. It’s women like Penelope Cruz and Sofia Vergara who are holding up a hand to the idea that anything should necessarily stop, or drastically change after pushing beyond the invisible barrier of 40. Marion Cotillard is hot on their heels–another who rapidly approaching the milestone, and just hitting stride. 2015, perhaps, Esquire?
