There are some celebrities who never seem to be in the headlines for the wrong reasons, and one of those stars is Ellen DeGeneres which makes it even more surprising with how much backlash she received recently.
DeGeneres came under fire after sharing a photo of Katy Perry for the singer’s birthday earlier this week on Wednesday, October 25. In the photo DeGeneres is standing in between her wife Portia de Rossi and Perry as she stares at Perry’s breasts with a shocked look on her face. Along with the photo, DeGeneres wrote, “Happy birthday, @KatyPerry! It’s time to bring out the big balloons!”
Although “It’s time to bring out the big balloons” is a lyric from Perry’s song “Birthday,” it was obviously implied that DeGeneres was joking about Perry’s breasts. Unfortunately for the comedian, the joke didn’t sit well with many fans who felt the photo seemed like a double standard and very insensitive as much of Hollywood is currently focused on the shocking sexual harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein.
Many fans and followers voiced their disappointment in the photo, writing, “I have lost respect for Ellen after seeing this. What a terrible example to set for so many young girls who look up to Ellen. Sad.” With others writing, “Come on Ellen…really it is not funny. If this were a man it would be an outrage. To me it is and it isn’t funny,” and “If a man did this, all hell would break loose. This is a f-ed up double standard…smh! #ellenweinstein.”
So far DeGeneres has not responded to the criticisms and has not deleted the tweet.
