Rapper 50 Cent had everyone coming up with all kinds of jokes recently after he filed for bankruptcy earlier this month. No one could resist an easy joke, especially if it was about a guy named 50 Cent who made his motto “Get Rich or Die Tryin” and was apparently out of money.

Many others were quick to point out that he obviously wasn’t really broke and was only filing to protect himself from a $5 million lawsuit from a woman who is seeking punitive damages after he posted a sex tape of her and another man online.

The rapper whose real name is Curtis Jackson stood by his broke story in court on Tuesday, July 22. He told the court that his entire rich and lavish lifestyle is all a lie, according to reports from the New York Daily News.

“It’s entertainment,” he said of the lifestyle he portrays in his music, videos and social media, including multiple luxury cars and making huge bets on boxing matches. When asked about his fleet of high end cars, including Bentleys and Ferraris, he said, “Those cars were rented,” and added that much of the diamond encrusted jewelry he wears is “borrowed.”

He went on to explain he only made $100,000 for his recent movie appearances in Spy and Southpaw and, when asked how much he made off of his $1.6 million bet on the huge Manny Pacquio versus Floyd Mayweather fight earlier this year, he stated, “I didn’t make the bet.”

When asked about his filing when speaking with Conan O’Brien he stated, “I need protection. You look like you’re doing okay… I gotta be frank with you… You know, you get a bullseye pinned on my back. When you’re successful, and you’re publicly known, you become the ideal person for people to have lawsuits for.”
