Fans of The Big Bang Theory are still reeling over the news that the upcoming season of the show will be its last, but the cast is also dealing with the realization.

On Wednesday, August 22, Entertainment Weekly broke the news that The Big Bang Theory would be coming to an end with season 12, with Warner Bros. Television, CBS and Chuck Lorre Productions announcing: “We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.”

Shortly after the news was confirmed, Kaley Cuoco who has starred as Penny for the show’s entire run took to her Instagram to share a sweet and emotional message.

“This ride has been a dream come true and as life changing as it gets. No matter when it was going to end, my heart would have always been broken in two,” she began.

“Drowning in tears, we promise to bring you the best season yet. To the fans, our crew, families, Chuck Lorre, Warner Brothers , CBS, and everyone who has supported us for so many years, thank you. We are goin out with a bang.”

Although CBS had originally been renegotiating for at least two more years of the show, Entertainment Weekly reported that star Jim Parsons, who plays Dr. Sheldon Cooper, did not want to continue on the show past season 12 and the network knew they could not go ahead with him.

The final season of The Big Bang Theory will premiere on CBS Monday, September 25, at 8 p.m. ET.
