A couple of weeks ago, late night host Jimmy Fallon made headlines when it was reported he had suffered a hand injury, which caused the taping of The Tonight Show to be postponed.

Initially, it seemed the injury wasn’t so bad, but, upon his return to the show on Monday, July 13, Fallon recounted the injury in gruesome details, revealing it was actually much worse than many thought.

With his left hand still very wrapped up, Fallon began by stating, “What a crazy break we had — a two week break. So basically what happened is, I tripped and fell in my kitchen on a braided rug that my wife loves and I can’t wait to burn to the ground. I tripped and fell and I caught my fall… I’m getting up and my finger is sideways.”

This is when things get even worse for Fallon, who was under the assumption he had merely broken his finger, so he wrapped it in a towel and took a cab to the hospital where they informed him he didn’t simply break his finger.

“It’s a thing called ring avulsion. A-V-U-L-S-I-O-N. If you Google it, it’s graphic images. Don’t Google it. But ring avulsion it’s a real thing… My ring got caught on the countertop when I was going down and stuck there and pulled my finger out,” he said, as the crowd cringed at the injury.

Fallon was then told he would have to go to a different hospital where he was also told that “odds aren’t great with these things…Usually they just cut your finger off. So I was going to lose my finger.” Luckily, he had a great doctor who was able to perform microscopic surgery on him. The doctor took a vein out of Fallon’s foot and put it in his finger. This landed him in the ICU for 10 days.

With all that time in the hospital, he joked that he was “losing it” and began reading about the meaning of life, watched The DUFF and then came up with a “new ring idea.” “I can’t give it away. But if you guys are in the ring business, I already have ideas. I have sketches drawn out. I had 10 days in the ICU.”
