Y&R’s Eric Braeden Blasts Previous Writing Team’s “Egos”

“Let’s call a spade a spade!” Eric Braeden insisted in his new interview with Soap Opera Digest (via Soap Opera Network).

The Young and the Restless (Y&R) star, much like his boxing alter ego Victor Newman, was not pulling punches when addressing “the last regime” of Y&R writers.

By last regime, it’s evident that Braeden is referring to the one led by former executive producer and head writer Mal Young.

Insisting that many of the storylines introduced during that time appealed to “no one”, Braeden then shared his theory as to why. “They were not part of the history of that show,” he stated. “I hate to say it, but obviously, the Newman empire is one of the main cornerstones of the show.”

In Braeden’s opinion, Young didn’t respect what the Newman empire meant to viewers.

“What the last regime really wanted, to be frank with you,” Braeden said, “was to get rid of me and get rid of Melody [Nikki Newman, played by Melody Thomas Scott], if you want to know the truth.”

What kind of Genoa City could exist without Victor and Nikki Newman? Luckily, the current Y&R team (led by executive producer Anthony Morina and head writer Josh Griffith) didn’t share that apocalyptic vision.

“You must remember that people who come onto the show as new executive producers have their own egos,” the soap opera icon explained, “and they think they can rewrite it, they can redo it all.”

“What they don’t understand is that [co-creator and former head writer] Bill Bell was a brilliant man who laid a very sound foundation,” Braeden continued, “and if you want to veer away from that foundation, it will begin to flounder.”

“That’s all I’m going to say,” he added. And there’s a mic drop moment from the Moustache!
