Bindi Irwin’s intimate wedding was certainly a family affair!
The Animal Planet star wed her longtime boyfriend Chandler Powell on March 25 wearing a long-sleeve gown that was inspired by her mother Terri’s wedding dress. “I wanted something very similar because I’ve admired [my mom’s] dress since I was tiny,” Bindi shared with PEOPLE. “When I was about 12 years old, I put on mum’s wedding dress and it was a really, really special… it’s over 50 years old because it’s been in the family for that long.”
The sunflower lace pattern that was incorporated into her dress was quite sentimental for Irwin. The sunflower lace sleeves “reminded me of my family and my dad,” she shared. “When we would go on projects and drives together, we’d often drive through these huge sunflower fields in the middle of nowhere and we always stopped to take them in,” she explains. “[The dress] was really special and beautiful.”
The second Irwin saw the dress, she knew it was the one. “It was just perfect, I said, ‘Oh my goodness, that’s the dress,’ and we all started crying again,” she recalled.
