ABC has officially announced their next Bachelor and the leading man was revealed to be Peter Weber, also known as Pilot Pete!

While many fans in Bachelor Nation were thrilled to hear Pete as the new lead, others were less than impressed. Pete was the center of a controversy during Hannah Brown’s Bachelorette season after being accused of having a girlfriend before he entered the show.

Ben Higgins, however, thinks that the Bachelor franchise made the right choice selecting Peter as the next Bachelor. While Higgins admitted he doesn’t know “a ton” about Weber, he has high hopes for his season. “I think he cares. I think [from] what I’ve seen is he’s sincere, he doesn’t think too highly of himself, but he also doesn’t think too low of himself either,” Higgins said. “I think he has a good head on his shoulders. I’m excited to see where this takes him.”

As someone whose been the Bachelor and tuned in for the past few seasons, Higgins believes he’s grasped the formula that makes a perfect lead. “All I want in a Bachelor and Bachelorette is somebody that’s 1. excited to find somebody potentially, and 2. somebody who’s willing to open up their life to us as viewers, and 3. [someone who] is wise in their decision-making,” he told Us Weekly. “I think [Peter] matches all of those categories.”

The Bachelor season 23 premieres on ABC January 6, 2020, at 8 p.m. ET.
