With the shock of his departure from the world’s biggest boy band still setting in for most fans, Zayn Malik, 22, is already speaking out about his decision to leave One Direction.

Only one day after his announcement, Malik opened up to U.K.’s The Sun about quitting and to add insult to injury, admitted he’s already working on solo music, although in his statement he said he was leaving because, “I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.”

When asked how he was feeling after the news that rocked the world of One Directioners Malik stated, “It is crazy and wild and a bit mad. But at the same time I’ve never felt more in control in my life. And I feel like I’m doing what’s right – right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good.”

Malik went on to also reassure everyone that there was no tension between himself and the band following the exit and that those who claim there is a lot of “negativity” between them “couldn’t be any more wrong.”

“I did try to do something that I wasn’t happy doing for a while, for the sake of maybe other people’s happiness […]And I only ever tried to do it for the fans, and it was only ever for them. And, basically, I’m only upset I feel like I may have let them down in some sort of way. That’s the main thing I don’t want to happen. It’s not that I’ve turned my back on them or anything, it’s just that I just can’t do that anymore because it’s not real to me.”

While he said he wanted some time away from fame, Malik was already spotted heading into a recording studio and told the paper he’s been working on his own music for some time now.
