“NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station! We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality,” Bridenstine tweeted.

The confirmation follows Deadline‘s report on Monday, May 4, that Cruise, Elon Musk’s SpaceX, and NASA are working together on the first narrative feature film to be shot in space. At this time, the project is not part of the Mission: Impossible franchise and no studio has been attached to it either, according to the outlet’s report.

Cruise has always pushed the envelope with his endless stunts, and as a result, has sustained multiple injuries throughout his decades-long career. For many, it would make sense that the actor would go to space. At this time of reporting, it is not confirmed what type of role he will be playing in the project.

Earlier in February, Cruise’s latest Mission Impossible movie became one of the first major projects to halt production due to the ongoing public health situation. Mission: Impossible 7 was filming in Italy at the time. The movie was set to film in the city for three weeks, but an increase in the number of people affected with the virus caused Paramount Pictures to pause the film’s production. Cruise was not in Italy at the time of production.
