Supergirl is coming to a close with its upcoming sixth season!

News of the show’s conclusion was announced by the CW, Warner Bros. TV, and Berlanti Productions on Tuesday, but it was not made clear whether the show was canceled or if the showrunner’s decided this season was going to be the end of the story.

The show’s writing team has planned for a 20-episode final season, which will begin production in Vancouver, Canada, later this month.

“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement,” actress Melissa Benoist wrote in an Instagram post after the news broke. “Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”

Supergirl debuted its first season in October 2015 on CBS, which began with more of a villain vs. superhero structure. The series jumped over to The CW for its second season and began exploring deeper topics such as immigration and gun control. It’s fourth season also made history by casting Nicole Maines as Dreamer, TV’s first transgender superhero.

Supergirl will return for its sixth and final season in 2021. Check out Benoist’s emotional statement below:
