After years of rumors, it seems the iconic teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210 is officially coming back!
On Wednesday, February 27, Fox Network announced that they were bringing the show back but not in the way fans expect. Original stars Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling are all set to star in the series which has simply been dubbed 90210 and so far is only set for six episodes.
So far, Luke Perry, who is currently starring as Fred Andrews on Riverdale, and Shannen Doherty have not been tied to the project but according to reports, “the door is still open” for them to join.
This won’t be like any other reboot with an original cast however because there is a big twist, which is instead of playing their characters, the actors and actresses will be playing versions of themselves!
The official description for the reboot reads: “The core cast will all play heightened versions of themselves in a brand-new serialized drama — with a healthy dose of irreverence – that is inspired by their real lives and relationships. Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast — whom the whole world watched grow up together — attempts to continue from where they left off?”
“Beverly Hills, 90210 left an indelible impact on pop culture and an entire generation,” said Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, Fox. “Its powerful legacy is an important part of our network’s DNA — bold stories not told anywhere else and bigger-than-life-characters — and we’re honored to bring back the beloved original cast members for 90210.”
Beverly Hills, 90210 premiered on Fox in 1990 and went on to become one of the top shows on the network. It aired for 10 seasons and spawned multiple series set in the same universe, including The CW’s 90210, which ran for five seasons from 2008 to 2013 and Fox’s Melrose Place which aired for seven seasons from 1992 to 1999.
