The Goldbergs is planning to make some big changes ahead of its 10th season.
The ABC sitcom has revealed that it is planning a “huge reboot” amid Jeff Garlin exiting the show last December. The show opted to have Garlin’s character, Murray, pass away last season amid allegations of Garlin’s inappropriate behavior on set.
The actor owned up to his behavior in a conversation with Vanity Fair that same month. He shared that he never intended to hurt anyone, saying, “I’m sorry, I truly am sorry, to have hurt anyone’s feelings, or made anyone feel greatly uncomfortable.”
The show’s co-showrunner Alex Barnow opened up to Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday about the new direction the show will take. “This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that,” Barnow revealed.
He added that the loss of Murray will shift focus to newlyweds Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and Geoff (Sam Lerner), who will welcome their first child. “So we’re starting with optimism about a baby coming and looking forward to the future,” Barnow continued. “It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional basis for the way people are behaving.”
Co-showrunner Chris Bishop added that the new season “feels like a huge reboot” with “tons of momentum.”
The Goldbergs premieres Sept. 21 at on ABC.
