‘Gossip Girl’ Reboot Release Delayed Until 2021

The Gossip Girl reboot isn’t premiering anytime soon.

The highly anticipated Gossip Girl revival was supposed to debut on HBO Max this fall, but it won’t be arriving on the streaming service until 2021, according to Vulture.

“They hadn’t even started production yet; they were in pre-production and ready to roll,” HBO Max chief content officer Kevin Reilly told the outlet. The ongoing public health situation has left Hollywood at a production standstill, putting several questions marks over numerous projects that have been scheduled to air later this year.

“Things that would have been really meaningful and high profile have gotten pushed back,” Reilly said to Vulture, adding that it is “really disappointing” that not all of the content intended to be included with HBO Max’s upcoming release will be ready in time.

Earlier this year, HBO Max’s Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey told press at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that “early casting conversations” for the Gossip Girl reboot were underway.

“We have gotten the first script and I think we all breathed a big sigh of relief because it’s quite good,” Aubrey also said at the time.

Since that news, 17-year-old Emily Alyn Lind was cast in a lead role, and in March, it was reported that Scream Queens star Tavi Gevinson, Legacies star Thoms Doherty, Adam Chanler-Berat and Zion Moreno would be joining the Gossip Girl reboot cast as well. Kristen Bell is also set to reprise her role as the show’s narrator.

The original Gossip Girl series, which aired from 2007 to 2012 on The CW, starred Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, and Ed Westwick.

HBO Max is slated to launch on May 27. The upcoming streaming service will offer 10,000 hours of content, including the entire HBO service and beloved franchises like Friends and The Big Bang Theory.

Other original HBO projects that have also been delayed due to the situation include the unscripted Friends reunion special and The Flight Attendant, starring Kaley Cuoco.
