14 Celebrities Who Should’ve Never Cut Their Hair Off

Not everyone can pull of short hair! Remember when Keri Russell decided to cut her long curly locks off during season two of “Felicity?” Viewers were pretty upset about the change – so upset, in fact, that it had a direct impact on ratings. After that, a network exec announced that they would no longer allow hairstyle changes on their network again. In spite of this, celebrities – who obviously look better with longer hair – still try to pull off short hairstyles. Here are our picks for 14 celebrities who should’ve never cut their hair off – Let us know if you agree!

14. Katy Perry

Katy Perry is a risk-taker when it comes to her hair. She’s had platinum hair, purple hair, blue hair, pink hair and green hair and, each and every time that she’s changed her hair, she’s always looked great. She recently took it one step further by cutting her hair into super short pixie, which doesn’t really suit her. She definitely looks better with more length.

While many think that Perry’s short hair has made her look older, the singer seems to really like the look and has stuck to her short cut for quite some time now!

13. Hayden Panettiere

Hayden Panettiere looks great with a bob; however, she looks really awful with a pixie cut. After examining some photos from 2010 when she chopped all of her hair off, we can honestly say that really short hair just doesn’t suit her. Also, she has no idea how to style a pixie cut. Slicking it back it just so unstylish. She could have kept her hair long and still rocked that look.

It looks like the former “Heroes” star was trying to redefine herself with her hair. Before she cut it off, she had dyed it red in an effort to distance herself from the cute blond girl image she had cultivated earlier in her career. “I’m typically a very fiery person anyway, but I just feel like cute and blonde and little is just so one category and one thing and changing my hair color, I feel like I don’t have to overcompensate so much for the fact that I don’t like being called cute or anything like that – especially being all 5ft 2 of me,” she told the Daily Mail.

12. Emma Watson

Emma Watson is practically perfect. She is incredibly fashionable, quite articulate, talented and just a great example of what every celebrity should aspire to be. While we usually praise everything that the former “Harry Potter” star does, we just cannot get behind her pixie cut. She has really fine features, which should have made the hairstyle work; however, it just never really looked that good on her.

Even if we never liked it, Watson really did. “If I had it my way, I would have just kept it short forever,” she told Glamour. “Of course, men like long hair. There’s no two ways about it. The majority of the boys around me were like, ‘Why did you do that? That’s such an error.’ And I was like, ‘Well, honestly, I don’t really care what you think!’ I’ve never felt so confident as I did with short hair – I felt really good in my own skin.”

11. Julianne Hough

Former Dancing With the Stars pro and actress Julianne Hough is truly stunning, and while she can really rock any look and style and has gone from long hair to short hair and everything in between, there is no doubt that cutting her hair short has been the least flattering. After rocking an absolutely perfect medium-length wind-swept bob in 2013, she drastically changed her hair in the summer of 2014 with a very-short pixie that simply did not do her justice. While she was of course still gorgeous, the styling of the cut was just awkward.

In 2018, Hough came under fire for her hair again, when she debuted an arguably worse hairstyle. In late 2018 the blonde beauty, who had previously dyed her hair red, cut her hair into a blunt bob with chopped bangs. “Detaching from what you know can be challenging, but also so freeing. 🙂 The best thing about hair is how you get to create, play and just have fun with it! So here is a new look, courtesy of frizzy ends needing a clean cut after going from red to blonde,” she shared when debuting the look in September 2018. Fans were quick to tell Hough the look just did not work on her with many saying it aged her unnecessarily.

10. Kirsten Dunst

After being known for her long blond locks for most of her career, Kirsten Dunst drastically changed things up in 2001 with a drastic cut and color change. Dunst donned a cropped auburn cut which suited her features, and she admitted she really liked it, saying it “made me feel soft and vulnerable.”

Despite pulling off the shorter look, two years later things went wrong when she cut her hair into a super-short pixie cut. At first glance, it would seem the actress would have the perfect features for that hairstyle but it ended up not really working on her. The severity of the cut meant the only thing that could be styled were her bangs but they were far too side-swept, and she ended up looking like a young boy. By 2004 she was already growing her hair back out and has not gone back to the super-short look.

9. Faith Hill

At this year’s Country Music Awards, Faith Hill showed up with a new hairstyle – a pixie cut. With the way her hair was styled, it was really hard to get a sense of its shape. It looks like she wanted a change, but not that much of one, hence the awkward length and awful styling. We personally prefer her with long hair. The next time she wants a change, we suggest that she goes for a bob. It is really hard to go wrong with that hairstyle!

This wasn’t the first time that the country singer has played with the length of her hair. She’s had short hair in the past and it was a total disaster. Her current hairstyle looks a bit like one that she has had in the past. The only difference is that the past cut had way more of a mullet-thing happening in the back.

8. Sienna Miller

Model and actress Sienna Miller’s hair has changed over the years, but for the most part she has stuck to her long blonde locks in varying styles, until she made one drastic move. In 2006, Miller took on the role of Edie Sedgwick in the film Factor Girl, and while she could have opted for a wig she instead decided to cut her hair short.

It was a bold move and a risky cut, and although nothing could detract from her beauty, many felt it just wasn’t the right look for her. The long on-top pixie was too close to a bowl cut and now closely resembles a hairstyle often found on Kpop boy band members. Miller clearly liked her short hair however and in 2015 she chopped her hair again, but instead opted for a longer bob with more texture which was much better suited to her.

7. Vanessa Hudgens

After a breakup, many people like to get a fresh start with a fresh look and that is exactly what Vanessa Hudgens did after her 2010 breakup from Zac Efron. After years of her long, dark hair flowing in the tabloids as the star of High School Musical and because of her relationship with Efron, she changed things up drastically in 2011 with a short new do.

Hudgens later explained she cut her hair off for her role as a pregnant, homeless teen in Gimme Shelter, and as many were quick to exclaim it did not suit her, she completely agreed. “Honestly, I kind of feel like a soccer mom, but we’re going to let that go,” she told Access. “There’s nothing wrong with soccer moms, but I’m only 22! I miss [my hair,] believe me, I do, but there’s nothing I can do about it.” Sure enough, after filming, Hudgens grew out her hair and hasn’t returned to the look.

6. Rachel McAdams

Although many stars are afraid to do anything drastic to their look for the risk of losing roles, actress Rachel McAdams has never been afraid to take hair risks. Her hair has been blonde, brunette, red and colors in between and she has also had long hair, medium bobs and short hair! After rocking long hair in various colors for quite some time, McAdams lobbed a lot of it off in 2007, and has since kept her hair at shoulder length or shorter.

While she obviously looks good, she did make a mistake when she chopped her hair into a fringe bob with blunt bangs in 2004. Blunt bangs barely work on anyone, even one of Hollywood’s most beautiful actresses, and the cut along with her darkest hair color yet was simply too harsh.

5. Miley Cyrus

Back in 2012, Miley Cyrus officially had enough of her Hannah Montana pop princess image, so she cut it all off! In one of the most shocking hair changes in Hollywood, Cyrus lobbed off her long brunette locks in favor of a very short platinum blond pixie cut. While many were shocked by the change, it was only the beginning as it didn’t take long for Cyrus to change up her music, start sticking her tongue out in nearly every picture and start wearing nipple pasties as part of her wardrobe regularly.

While the hairstyle could have looked much worse, many hated it because it marked the drastic and rather unfavorable change in the actress and singer. Cyrus, of course, did not care what others thought and said for the first time she was finally being herself and showing her true self.

4. Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway chopped her hair off to play Fantine, a prostitute, in “Les Miserables.” She ended up winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the film and has kept the hairstyle for almost two years. It looks like she is finally growing it out and we’re pretty relieved. She doesn’t have the dainty features needed to rock a pixie cut, so we’re anxious for her to get a different hairstyle.

When the critically acclaimed actress cut off her hair, she was initially pretty unhappy with the change. It affected her so much that she cried. “I realized I couldn’t take it back,” she said. “It had the effect of changing my identity. I was reduced to a mental patient level of crying…I was inconsolable.” We can’t help but wonder why she decided to keep the hairstyle for so long if she initially loathed it. Maybe it really grew on her!

3. Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley cut her hair off to play Hazel Grace Lancaster, a cancer-stricken teen, in the movie “The Fault In Our Stars.” While she initially cried as it was being cut off, she quickly grew to like it. After a year of this hairstyle, we haven’t grown to like it. Like Hayden Panettiere, she really likes to wear it slicked back. She could have just kept it long.

On the plus side, when the “Divergent” star cut her hair off, she donated it to the nonprofit organization, Children With Hair Loss. They will use her hair to create a wig for someone who needs it. “If you are in the position to cut off 8 inches of your hair, then I strongly urge you to do it. There are so many human beings out there who would LOVE the opportunity to possess long hair, but simply cannot because of their current situation. Let’s share!” Woodley wrote on Tumblr.

2. Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence is like the girl next door. She’s attractive, funny and totally candid. She has no problems saying exactly what is on her mind. We personally never really liked her with long, shapeless hair; however, we like her even less with a pixie cut. The hairstyle itself would look fine on someone else – it just doesn’t suit her.

According to Francis Lawrence, director of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” Jennifer cut her hair because it was fried from all of the dying. “She used to give me a hard time about the hair because I was always saying, ‘Dye your hair, dye your hair. We need your hair dyed, no wigs!’ And then of course, dying her hair fried her hair, so she had to cut her hair,” he said. “At first I didn’t realize it was messed up. I thought she was cutting it just to wear wigs to make me mad, but it wasn’t the case. We actually fried her hair, which is sad. I feel bad.”

1. Kaley Cuoco

Kaley Cuoco has the sort of face that was made for longer hair. In spite of this, she opted to cut her long locks off in favor of a pixie. While she may like the change, we (and many others) aren’t as fond. She might call this a reinvention, but we definitely feel like she pulled a Felicity with this one.

“When I wrapped season 7 of Big Bang a couple months ago, we cut it short that night. I haven’t had my hair cut in over 20 years. I was ready for a change – I felt like I needed to reinvent myself and that cut was awesome,” she told Women’s Health. “And I kept seeing people cutting their hair shorter and shorter, and I thought, it’s only a few more inches, and I talked to my hair dresser and we cut it. I loved it, I didn’t want to stop. I am surprised I did not shave my head.”
