The red carpet was rolled out at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 30 for the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards. While everyone was anticipating what kind of antics the biggest, and most opinionated, mainstream stars would get into once on the stage, it all started with red carpet fashion. The VMAs have always been known for being distinctive and “out there,” which means typical awards show fashion need not apply for this event, and while showing off unique style is appreciated, it made finding five for the best dressed harder than ever. While quite a few stars wore outlandish or barely there, a few found a good balance between sexy yet fun.

5. Kylie Jenner

To say Kylie Jenner’s stardom has taken off in the past year or so would be a huge understatement and, as such, everyone, both fans and haters, can’t wait to see what the recently turned 18-year-old would be wearing. Jenner is known for changing hairstyles from day-to-day and too often rocking way too revealing outfits. It seems, however, turning 18 garnered a more mature look and Jenner looked stunning in an embellished nude/tan minidress with full sleeves. Many were not fans of her new hairstyle with bangs, but her style was perfect. She matched her gorgeous dress with gladiator style stilettos and just enough jewlery to keep the shine going.

4. Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens took a turn away from blockbuster films by trying her talents on Broadway, but she continues to attend big Hollywood events, showing off her hippie-inspired style. Hudgens has rocked the flower-child look long before Coachella made it popular and did to perfection for her VMAs look. The beauty donned a plunging Naeem Khan blush colored dress. The floral appliques set off the Bohemian vibe matched by her wavy hair complete with braid and flowers as well. From the makeup to the jewelry to the hair, Hudgens’ entire ensemble showed off her personality without showing off all of her skin.

3. Chrissy Teigen

The “barely there” outfits that have become popular among the stars may have been overdone at this year’s VMAs, but Lip Sync Battle commentator and red carpet wonder Chrissy Teigen knew exactly how much was enough. Teigen looked amazing in a sheer dress with a high neck and embellished bodice. While her gorgeous legs were a lot to take in with the sheer skirt and ankle-strap heels, it was enough to definitely be sexy, but not too much to be offensive. A great updo, and minimal makeup and jewlery let her dress steal the show, and rightly so — it was an awesome red carpet pick.

2. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has long been an advocate of body confidence since opening up about her own battles with eating disorders and, with a new album entitled “Confident,” she couldn’t be exuding just that any more than she was in her light pink Nicola Jebran dress. The neckline was enough to keep it sexy and the designs were enough to keep it fun and the result was an excellent red carpet look.

1. Kourtney Kardashian

Last but certainly not least, Kourtney Kardashian has been dominating her split from Scott Disick with her amazing “breakover.” The eldest Kardashian sister showed off her amazing post-split and post-baby body in a 70s inspired look with a hot-pink jumpsuit. It may be a simple outfit but jaws dropped when Kourtney made her appearance in the suit complete with plunging neckline, a gold clutch and gold heels. Nothing fancy was necessary with her hair because everyone were definitely staring at the outfit.
