With a fresh new year ahead of us, it’s now that time of the year to forecast the fashion trends going forward into the new year. In 2017, we saw Meghan Markle announce her engagement in a crisp white wrap coat and Selena Gomez rock an all leather dress to the AMA awards, but what’s in store for fashion in the new year? Follow along as we trace all the biggest fashion trends for 2018 based on stylish breakout celebrities who have already set the precedent:
12. Polka dots – Kendall Jenner
Polka dots were a huge trend in 2017 and it seems so far that they aren’t going anywhere for 2018 either! Kendall Jenner has rocked this particular white minidress on multiple occasions during the summer and also recently posted it on her Instagram in a mirror selfie shot. We’ve seen many stars follow this trend from Kate Middleton to Chrissy Teigen whether it be bold statement pieces or dotted accessories. Continue wearing polka dot print into the new year, it’s definitely sticking around for a while!
11. Side stripes — Amanda Stanton
Athleisure was a huge trend in 2017, and so much so that it started translating into everyday clothing items as well! A huge trend we predict moving forward into the new year is athletic style denim. Many recent trendy jeans have a side stripe detailing that is reminiscent of a pair of casual track pants but is totally fashion-forward, polished and chic looking. These grey and red side striped jeans from former Bachelor contestant Amanda Stanton is the perfect example of this trend!
10. Colorful footwear — Dakota Johnson
Colorful footwear has been a huge trend during the late months of 2017, and we can most definitely predict this trend will stay for the new year. Red and white boots seemed to be the ongoing trend in 2017 and this will undeniably translate into the spring with peppy colored sandals and flats. Colorful shoes are a great way to spice up a plain outfit just like Dakota Johnson did with this white tee and jeans combo.
9. Shearling — Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
Shearling coats and detailing has been a huge trend this winter! We first saw this trend pop up in winter 2016 and it definitely came full force again this 2017 season, which leads us to believe it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley recently stepped out wearing a full-blown shearing teddy bear coat, but we’ve also spotted stars like Selena Gomez wearing simple shearling details around the collar or sleeve of a piece.
8. Cat eye sunglasses — Ashley Tisdale
Despite it being in the midst of the cooler season right now, sunglasses are definitely still a huge style statement and add an extra diva factor to an outfit! The cat eye shaped sunglasses are a huge trend in Hollywood right now and stars from Gigi Hadid, Ashley Tisdale, and Selena Gomez have all been spotted rocking this glamorous look while strutting the streets.
7. Boots tucked into skirts — Meghan Markle
Meghan Markle is undeniably the biggest up and coming style icon for 2018 after she became named the fiancee of Prince Harry! Markle was always in the spotlight as an actress on Suits, but her fame skyrocketed post-engagement, especially after the chic white coat she was spotted in! With this in mind, we’re quite confident that the trends Markle rocks while out and about will most definitely become popular with the mainstream as well. This particular look with her high boots tucked into her midi-length skirt was a huge hit with fans and an easy trend to mimic!
6. Oversized blazers — Jojo Fletcher
A chic blazer is a timeless piece that never goes out of style, but this year we’ve seen many stars wear a twist on this classic look! Rather than wearing a cropped, tailored blazer, many stars are opting for an oversized look instead. Jojo Fletcher wears this trend perfectly by wearing her oversized blazer as a dress, and many stars have followed suit with their own versions of the oversized blazer whether it be pairing it casually with a graphic tee or wearing it as outerwear.
5. Lavender — Kate Middleton
Millenial pink and cherry red were the colors of the year among celebrities last year, but what’s in store for 2018? Fashionista Kate Middleton set the standard when she stepped out wearing this chic lavender long sleeve dress and many fashion runways were dotted with this soft purple color as well. Going into spring, we most definitely expect to see lavender as the popular color amongst the stars!
4. Straight leg jeans — Olivia Culpo
A casual pair of jeans will always be on trend, but the styles of denim definitely transition with the season! The latest denim trend we’ve noticed with the stars is straight leg denim! These jeans are a happy medium between a pair of skinnies and boyfriend jeans and allow just enough room for maximum comfort while still looking polished. This pair Olivia Culpo is wearing sits on her hips at the perfect height and crops in a flattering way at her ankles to show a little leg.
3. Balloon Sleeves — Zendaya
Statement sleeves were all the rage in 2017 and so far it seems to be a trend that will translate into 2018 as well! Most recently, balloon sleeves have been everywhere and actress Zendaya pulls off this look flawlessly. Her girly coral top features a subtle balloon sleeve that cinches at the wrist and billows down from her shoulder. The balloon sleeve top trend is visually interesting and adds something extra to a simple blouse.
2. Check print — Hailey Baldwin
Check print was everywhere this year, especially during fashion week! Whether it be an oversized blazer or pair of tailored trousers, we saw almost every star pull out this print in 2017. Hailey Baldwin was recently spotted wearing a full check ensemble that consisted of a matching minidress and blazer combo. The check print is polished and sophisticated but can also be dressed down if paired with a graphic tee or casual jeans.
1. Sheer details — Meghan Markle
Meghan Markle once again set the trend when she stepped out in this sheer dress for her official engagement photo shoot with Prince Harry. The look was undeniably sultry with its sheer bodice encrusted with swirling sequins, but still demure and fit for a future royal. We totally imagine this sheer trend taking over in the new year, especially with a little extra sparkle and glitz like Markle!
