10 Celebrity Brides Who Didn’t Wear White Dresses

A traditional wedding calls for the cutting of a tiered cake, a romantic first dance and, of course, a beautiful white wedding dress. Although these traditions may remain true for some, the celebrities of Hollywood have proven that this isn’t the only way to celebrate the big day! Many celebrities have proven that, with their choice of bridal attire, bending the rules and breaking traditional wedding expectations can result in a seriously epic fashion moment. Follow along for 10 celebrity brides who opted against the traditional wedding gown and wore a different color dress on the big day:

10. Sarah Jessica Parker

Although many may remember Sarah Jessica Parker’s biggest wedding moment from the Sex and the City movie, her real-life wedding actually looked the complete opposite of the glamorous Carrie Bradshaw! The dress definitely made quite the stir back in 2009 and at the time she claimed the reason behind her dress was to avoid drawing attention to herself. In 2016, however, she admitted that if she could get married again she would have done it differently. “I’d wear a beautiful, proper wedding dress, like I should have worn that day,” she told the Today show.

9. Gwen Stefani

Despite their decision to go separate ways, when Gwen Stefani married Gavin Rossdale back in 2002, the rocker couple definitely lived up their edgy reputation. Gwen broke from the traditional white wedding gown and wore a custom Christian Dior gown designed by John Galliano. The dress incorporated traditional aspects by featuring a princess-style voluminous skirt but broke expectations by featuring a hot pink dip-dyed bottom. Gwen was definitely one of the first brides to wear a colored wedding look and arguably started the trend that many nontraditional celebrity brides followed in the years to come.

8. Jessica Biel

The world was thrilled when Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel married, but many questioned the frothy pink gown that Biel wore. When questioned about her nontraditional bridal attire, Biel commented, “I wanted the dress to be very romantic and feminine and a shape that I very rarely wear. I have never been crazy about all-white wedding dresses, for me at least. [Giambattista Valli] had created that same fabric in a fuchsia-and-pink combination for a dress in a previous collection, and I asked him if he could create that same pattern in a white combination, and he suggested pink. It was a bit of a leap of faith at the time, but it turned out better than I could have ever imagined. [Putting it on], I felt like I had made the right choice. I felt elegant. And it moved like a dream.”

7. Amber Tamblyn

Actress Amber Tamblyn tied the knot with David Cross in a bright yellow dress that was definitely a far cry from the traditional wedding dress route! The star celebrated her wedding barefoot and surrounded by her closest family and friends, which included her Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants costars Blake Lively, America Ferrera and Alexis Bledel. “It was marigold, and it had a train in the back that was cream,” Tamblyn told Us Weekly back in 2012. When asked further about her color selection Tamblyn simply justified the decision by explaining, “There’s nothing really traditional about me.”

6. Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley had the ultimate no-fuss wedding dress back when she married James Righton back in 2013. The powder pink Chanel dress featured a whimsical tulle skirt which she paired with custom Chanel flats and a Chanel jacket. Typically, wedding gowns are worn once and then stored away as a keepsake to be never worn again. Knightley most definitely did not take this approach and was spotted on multiple occasions re-wearing the dress she wore on her wedding nuptials!

5. Kaley Cuoco

Big Bang Theory actress Kaley Cuoco wore a custom petal pink Vera Wang gown from the Fall 2014 runway collection on her big day. The strapless tulle ball gown featured a sweetheart neckline, applique Chantilly lace accents and gathered detailing along the bodice. The blond beauty was hardly breaking ground when she stepped out in this pink creation because Jessica Biel and Gwen Stefani already debut wedding gowns in the romantic color, but this was definitely still a noteworthy colored dress!

4. Alison Pill

Alison Pill definitely didn’t hesitate in marrying fiance Joshua Leonard and the duo was married just four months after announcing their engagement. For the big day, Pill wore a vintage style yellow wedding dress that featured a sheer bodice, cap sleeves, and a cinched waistline. The retro gown seemed quite suited for the event which had an earthy, traditional feel to it. She completed her look with pinned flowers to her chest, a bright red lip, and tight blond curls.

3. Dianna Agron

Glee actress Dianna Agron married Mumford & Sons singer Winston Marshall in a stunning Moroccan ceremony where she wore the most unexpected wedding gown! Rather than the traditional frothy bridal gown, Agron opted for a nude chiffon gown that was embroidered with sequins, beading, and glitter. The bold Valentino number cost a rumored $20,500 and was previously spotted on the Paris Fashion Week runway as part of the Valentino Autumn/Winter 2016 collection.

2. Shenae Grimes

90210 actress Shenae Grimes wore the exact opposite of what color is expected of a wedding dress and rocked a black gown during her 2013 wedding! The Vera Wang number was part of the 2012 Fall collection and featured a V-neck halter style neckline, a Chantilly lace bodice and distressed organza and tulle in a crinkle style skirt.

1. Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore wore a super unconventional slim-fitting Prada dress to her intimate wedding ceremony back in 2003. Moore married husband Bart Freundlich at their friend’s Greenwich Village home and donned an understated pale lavender gown that was definitely far from the traditional white number. She paired the look with green strappy sandals and let her red locks fall in natural whisps around her face. Her husband stayed true to the purple theme and wore a cream suit with a royal purple tie and lilac dress shirt.
