This Is Us: 8 Questions We Need Answered During The Second Half Of Season 2

Ron Batzdorff/NBC

This Is Us has been breaking fans’ hearts since it began yet they still can’t get enough of the incredible NBC drama. Although This Is Us has only been airing for a season and a half, it has often left us with more questions than answers and after three incredible “Big Three” episodes which culminated in one major bombshell moment, there are a lot of things fans need answered heading into the second half of season two. Here are 8 lingering questions that hopefully get answered when season two of This Is Us returns:

8. Will We See Another Kate Pregnancy?

Although fans have been accustomed to heartbreaking moments in the show, no one was prepared for Kate’s tragic miscarriage. While the Kate-centric episode “Number Two” promised that Kate and Toby would try again to have a baby when they were ready, it will be interesting to see if that happens in this season. The few sneak peeks that have been offered seemingly show the season picking up at least a few months after the big mid-season finale and fans want to know if Kate and Toby are still in a good place after their tragedy or once again facing struggles in their relationship.

7. Do Randall and Beth Foster That Young Boy?

While taking on a foster child was clearly challenging for both Randall and Beth, in the end, it turned out to be the rewarding experience they were searching for in hopes of helping a young person in need. Of course, fans saw at the end of Randall’s episode that he wanted to try fostering again in the future and hoped for a “little boy.” At the same time that Randall was saying this, a young black boy was seen talking to a social worker who was assuring him they were searching for the right family to take him in. Like Kevin’s problem with drinking mimicking Jack’s issues, fans want to know if history is going to repeat itself with Randall taking in a young boy with no family like he was when he was left at the firehouse. If the second half of the season does pick up a few months after where the first half ended, it would make sense that Randall and Beth’s storyline jumps right into fostering or perhaps adopting the little boy.

6. Will Deja Be Back?

For much of the beginning of season two, Deja dominated Beth and Randall’s storyline and had one of the biggest character developments of the season, but it still seemed rushed and wrapped up way too quickly. While it seemed like the episode ended with a final goodbye to Deja, fans aren’t ready for it to be the end just yet as her character added a new and refreshing dynamic to Randall’s story. Sterling K. Brown has also offered hope that Lyric Ross will be back in the role of Deja, telling Entertainment Weekly, “I have not shot anything with her as of yet. I’m crossing my fingers.”

5. What Happens to Tess?

For the most part, Randall’s children Tess and Annie have played minimal roles in This Is Us, but the end of “Number Three,” which was the mid-season finale, saw Tess in a different capacity. The eldest daughter of Beth and Randall snuck into her Uncle Kevin’s car and urged him to slow down as he drove erratically and impaired, unaware at first that she was in the vehicle. It was the first time Tess expressed her own frustration with her family and dealing with her parents need to foster. Hopefully, the show explores more of Tess and even Annie’s perspective which again will add another level to Randall’s home life and could play a part in his and Beth’s decision to foster again. Not to mention, Tess will have to deal with seeing her uncle, whom she idolized, getting arrested.

4. Do We See The Big Three in College?

This Is Us has explored a lot of different decades in the lives of Jack, Rebecca, Kevin, Kate, and Randall Pearson, but their college years are ones that have been largely glossed over. Season two showed more of the Big Three as they prepared for college and then showed them in their 20s, but fans want to know if we will see Randall choose his college after seeing his interest in going to Washington’s historically black college or if his father’s death will change his plans.

3. What Happens to Kevin?

Fans saw Kevin officially hit rock bottom as Justin Hartley gave his best performance yet in the role in the episode “Number One,” but things got even worse with his DUI arrest in the mid-season finale. With Kevin lamenting in his episode that no matter how bad things get for him he always comes out on top, we want to know if this is finally the one thing that Kevin cannot come out of as the star. His arrest will most definitely have a major effect on his career and personal relationships and fans are curious to see how that is dealt with and what is next for the character after the major turn of events.

2. How Does the DUI Affect The Big Three?

So far, This Is Us has shown the tumultuous relationships between Kevin, Kate and Randall over the years and the ups and downs they have endured as siblings, but without a doubt, it has been Kevin and Randall with the most differences. Although they seemed to be getting closer in their adult years, fans are wondering they are going to see a major setback in their relationship after Kevin’s DUI arrest while Tess is in the car. Randall and Beth made it clear how angry they were with Kevin and it would be understandable if they never let him off the hook for putting their daughter in danger. Of course, it seems we are also headed into uncharted territory with Kevin and Kate as, for the first time in their lives, he was not there for his sister when she needed him most. The final episode before the break concluded with a monologue from Jack who commented on The Big Three that, when one was falling down, the other was standing and it is unclear if Randall and Kate will be there to help Kevin or if his actions cause a strain in their bond.

1. How Does Jack Die?

Last but certainly not least is the question that has been haunting fans since the first season: how does Jack die? While season two has established that the Pearson house burns down, there have been no definite answers that Jack dies in that fire and, if he does, there is still a lot that fans need to know. How does he die in the fire? Does the faulty fuse box have anything to do with his death? Why does Kate blame herself for his death? Naturally, ever since learning that Jack does die fans have been left with more questions than answers and hopefully the rest of season two will at least clear a few of them up.
