Netflix November 2020: What's Coming & Going

Every year brings brand new and exciting series to television and with endless networks and streaming services, there is no shortage of quality television to binge. Unfortunately, every new year also brings the end to some of the most beloved and popular TV shows and 2020 is no different! This year will mark the end of many well-known series, so here are some beloved shows that are quickly coming to an end:

22. The Magicians

After five seasons, Syfy cut the cord on the fantasy drama The Magicians. The news come as a surprise to fans as the news means that the April 1st season five finale will now serve as the series finale. “The Magicians has been a part of our SYFY family for five fantastic seasons,” said Syfy in a statement obtained by EW. “As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever.”

Netflix October 2020: What's Coming & Going

21. Hawaii Five-O

Hawaii Five-O was one of the few reboots to resonate with fans almost as much as the original, but in late February 2020 it was announced that the beloved series would be coming to an end after 10 incredible seasons. “It’s never easy to say goodbye to a hit franchise that carried on the legacy of the original with such distinction while establishing its own signature style,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “From episode one, Hawaii Five-0 has been a huge success for us. Thanks to the amazing talents of the producers, writers, cast and crew, it has played a key role for a decade on our schedule and helped establish our powerhouse Friday night. We cannot be prouder of its quality, longevity and are thankful for the passionate fan-devotion it inspired.” Hawaii Five-O comes to an end with a two-hour series finale on April 3, 2020.

Netflix September 2020: What's Coming & Going

20. Judge Judy

It truly is the end of an era when Judge Judy signs off of TV. In early March 2020 it was announced that Judy Sheindlin would be stepping out from behind the gavel after 25 seasons, but would be returning with a brand new series. “I’ve had a 25-year-long marriage with CBS and it’s been successful,” she said. “Next year will be our 25th season, silver anniversary, and CBS, I think felt they wanted to optimally utilize the repeats of my program. Because now they have 25 years of reruns. So, what they decided to do was to sell a couple of years’ worth of reruns. But I’m not tired, so Judy Justice will be coming out a year later.” The 25th and final season of Judge Judy is expected to air in late 2020 or early 2021.

19. How to Get Away with Murder

In May 2019, ABC renewed the hit series How to Get Away with Murder for a sixth season which elated fans, but only months later it was announced that the sixth season would be the last. “Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do — as it did here. For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom,” creator Peter Nowalk said. The sixth and final season comes to an end on April 2, 2020.

18. The Ranch

Many weren’t sure that The Ranch was going to last very long after the abrupt exit of Danny Masterson, and now it has been confirmed the series will end on in 2020. Star and executive producer Ashton Kutcher revealed in early June that the show’s fourth season would be its last. “@theranchnetflix is coming to an end, but not just yet. We’re excited to bring you the final 20 episodes — 10 streaming later this year (2019) on @netflix, and then 10 more in 2020,” he captioned a cast photo featuring himself and costars Dax Shepard, Sam Elliott and Elisha Cuthbert. “Stay tuned!” After the first part of the final season premiered on September 13, 2019, the second part will be released on January 24, 2020, bringing the comedy to an end.

Netflix July 2020: What's Coming & Going

17. Arrow

Fans of The CW’s superhero series Arrow were stunned when it was announced in early March that the series would be ending with its eighth season. Star Stephen Amell revealed that the final season would only consist of 10 episodes which is a dramatic cut from the 22 episode seasons the show usually produces. “Playing Oliver Queen has been the greatest professional experience of my life…but you can’t be a vigilante forever,” Amell tweeted. “Arrow will return for a final run of 10 episodes this Fall. There’s so much to say… for now I just want to say thank you.” The eighth and final season of Arrow will premiered in the fall of 2019 and consists of 10 episodes before coming to an end on January 28, 2020.

Netflix June 2020: What's Coming & Going

16. The Good Place

After its debut in 2016, The Good Place quickly became a critically acclaimed series that seemed to have a lasting place on television. Unfortunately, the show’s creator never intended that to be the case. In early June, 2019 creator Mike Schur revealed that the series would be ending after its fourth season. “After The Good Place was picked up for season 2, the writing staff and I began to map out, as best we could, the trajectory of the show,” he said. “Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the pace at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons – just over 50 episodes – was the right lifespan. At times over the past few years we’ve been tempted to go beyond four seasons, but mostly because making this show is a rare, creatively fulfilling joy, and at the end of the day, we don’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant. As such, the upcoming fourth season will be our last.” The Good Place comes to an end with a series finale on January 30, 2020.

15. Fresh Off The Boat

There was some controversy brewing among the cast of the hit ABC comedy Fresh Off the Boat when star Constance Wu seemed disappointed when it was renewed for a sixth season, but fortunately for her shortly after, the network announced that season six would be the last. “We couldn’t be prouder of this game-changing show and the impact it has had on our cultural landscape,” ABC President Karey Burke said in a statement. “The success of Fresh Off the Boat has helped pave the way for inclusion throughout the industry. Nahnatchka Khan and her brilliant creative team have created an unforgettable series with an Asian-American family front and center, something that hadn’t been done in two decades. The cast, led by Randall Park and Constance Wu, is one of the finest and funniest on television. We’ll miss the Huang family and are eternally grateful for the incredibly heartfelt stories they have told these past six seasons.” The longest-running sitcom about Asian-Americans in broadcast TV history, will end with a sixth and final season in 2020 consisting of 15 episodes with the finale airing on February 21, 2020.

14. Criminal Minds

One of the saddest final season announcements came on Thursday, January 10 when CBS announced that they had renewed Criminal Minds for a fifteenth season, but it would be the last one. The network also tweeted: “Next, get ready for a momentous ride: Season 15 will be our epic final season.” To break fans’ hearts even more, CBS also confirmed that season 15 would only feature 10 episodes which is down from 15 in season 14 and for the first 13 episodes the series featured 20-26 episodes per season. “It is the quintessential CBS hit. We are so proud to have aired it,” said Amy Reisenbach, CBS’ EVP current programs.“It speaks to everything we do best, which is air quality television. It’s been successful not only on air but online, in syndication, internationally for ABC (Studios).” The final season of Criminal Minds consists of only 10 episodes and premieres on January 8, 2020 before coming to an end in the spring.

13. Homeland

It is difficult for even the biggest shows to continue on after one of the main stars decides to exit, and Homeland has decided not to try to go on without Claire Danes. After Danes revealed she no longer wanted to work on the series past season eight, the network decided to cancel the show. Showrunner Alex Gansa reassured fans that just because it is ending, it doesn’t mean things are going to be easy in season eight. “Season 8 will be overseas somewhere. We get to play a story with larger national stakes in season 7 and we’ll go back to a smaller intelligence-based season in 8.” He also stated, “We’re going to start fresh in season 8 and probably do a fairly big time jump between 7 and 8 and put any Trump parallels behind us” and “We’ll tell a very contained story, hopefully in Israel.” The eighth and final season of Homeland premieres February 9, 2020 and will consist of 12 episodes before coming to an end.

12. Will & Grace

In September 2017, NBC had one of the most buzzed about TV revivals yet when Will & Grace was brought back for a ninth season over a decade since the series concluded in 2006 after eight seasons. Following three seasons of the revival, it will be time to say goodbye to the gang again as season 11 will be the last. “We think of the Will & Grace reboot episodes the way Karen Walker thinks of martinis – 51 is not enough, 53 is too many. That is why, after consulting with the cast, we all have decided this will be the final season,” executive producers Max Mutchnick, David Kohan, and James Burrows said in a statement. “They say you can’t go home again, but we did. And now, three seasons and 52 episodes later, we’re even more proud of something we never thought we’d get a chance to do again. We have had a once-in-a-lifetime experience twice. And for that, we owe a double debt of gratitude to NBC, this show’s supportive and caring home since day one.” The final season will consist of 18 episodes and is slated to air and conclude in 2020.

11. Shameless

After then loss of some stars and the return others, it was announced in mid-January that the beloved series Shameless was coming to an end with its 11th season. While the end of the series is disappointing, it isn’t all that surprising especially since the original British series also ran for 11 seasons.

10. Supernatural

After an unprecedented run as a sci-fi/fantasy series, The CW’s Supernatural will be coming to an end in 2020. The cast of the series came together on March 23, 2019 to reveal that the show’s fifteenth season would be its last. “We have some big news that we wanted y’all to hear from us,” Jared Padalecki said in a video shared on social media with Ackles delivering the kicker: “We just told the crew that though we’re very, very excited about moving into our 15th season, it will be our last…We wanted you to hear from us that though we’re excited about net year, it will be the finale, the big grand finale of an institution.” Season 15 of Supernatural premiered in October 2019 with a finale planned for May 18, 2020.

9. The 100

After seven seasons, the popular sci-fi drama The 100 will be coming to an end in 2020. In August 2019, the series creator Jason Rothenberg made the announcement on Twitter, “With #The100 Season 6 finale just days away, I have some bittersweet news to share: Season 7 will be our last,” he wrote. “We are eternally grateful to WB & CW for always allowing us to tell our story the way we want to & to wrap the show on our terms. What an incredible ride this has been!” Season seven is expected to premiere in the spring of 2020 and come to an end in the summer.

Sudden TV Character Exits We Didn't See Coming

8. Lucifer

Although the popular series Lucifer was saved by Netflix after Fox’s cancellation, it didn’t last long on the streaming service. After three seasons, Fox canceled the series before Netflix saved it and gave it a shortened fourth season. In June 2019, Netflix announced that it has renewed the show, but only for one more season. “We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms,” showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich said Thursday in a statement. “Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support. The best is yet to come!” Netflix also said, “We are thrilled that Lucifer fans around the world have embraced this series on Netflix, and we can’t wait to give them the big finish they’ve all been waiting for.” While no specific premiere date for the final season has been set, many are expecting it to be in mid-2020.

7. GLOW

After it looked like Netflix’s unique and witty female wrestling series GLOW wouldn’t even return for a fourth season, it was finally announced that the season would come back for season four — but it would be the last. “The fun of our show is there is no going backwards,” co-showrunner Carly Mensch said.“People are in very different places than they were the last time they were in Los Angeles. There’s been a really fun Vegas impact. None of our characters are actually where they were, now that I’m doing the math. For such a character-driven show, for us the setting or the location isn’t as important to us as where people are in their lives — where Ruth is, where Debbie is, Carmen’s headed for a pretty drastically different place, a lot of the women at the end of season 3 don’t even know the potential opportunities ahead. As we’re heading to some pretty new territory for us, even if maybe the landscape looks familiar, can you go home again, can you never go home again are all things that we’re excited to dive into.” The fourth and final season is expected to air in the summer of 2020.

6. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be coming to an end with its seventh season. In July 2019, A message posted to the show’s Twitter account read, “Next summer’s Season 7 will be the last for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Thanks to our fans for allowing us to be the longest-running Marvel TV series to-date.” No date has been set, but the final season is expected to premiere in mid 2020 and conclude late in the year.

5. 13 Reasons Why

In the summer of 2019, ahead of the season 3 premiere, it was announced that the controversial teen drama 13 Reasons Why had been renewed for a fourth and final season. The fourth season is supposedly going to center around the core cast’s graduation from high school. The final season of the series is expected to air in the summer of 2020.

4. Bojack Horseman

The acclaimed Netflix animated series Bojack Horseman is reaching its end. After five seasons as one the best animated series on TV, it was announced that its sixth season would be the last and would consist of 16 episodes. It was later revealed that it was Netflix’s decision to cancel the series and not the creators with creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg “You know, it’s a business. They’ve got to do what’s right for them, and six years is a very healthy run for a TV show. Frankly, I’m amazed we got this far. It’s a weird show and a lot of things on Netflix don’t get second seasons. I think we just got very lucky when we premiered. It just so happened that summer there wasn’t too much other stuff going on. People could gradually discover our show and fall in love with it. I also think Netflix had a lot of faith in it, and really believed in it, and gave it time to find that audience. And I really appreciated that.” Part one of the final season premiered on October 25, 2019 and part two premieres on January 31, 2020.

3. Empire

After an incredibly dramatic time off-screen due to cast issues at the end of season five, Fox decided to bring Empire back for a sixth season but it will be its last. “We’re turning the final season of Empire into a large television event. If you look at what we’re doing with Empire… we really are trying to go out guns a-blazing,” Charlie Collier, CEO of Fox Entertainment, told reporters on a press call Monday morning. “One of the great benefits of announcing a final season is to allow the fans to lean in and to have the ending they deserve, and that’s everything we’re trying to do with this iconic series. Six years is a pretty remarkable run for a drama series and we feel good about it.” The final season will premiere on September 24, 2019 and is slated to end in the spring of 2020.

2. Modern Family

After an impressive run as one of TV’s most successful family comedies, Modern Family is ending with its eleventh season. In early February, ABC announced that the series had been renewed for one more season, but that would be it. “For 10 years, our characters have bravely faced turning points in life and moved through them to great personal enrichment; we have chosen a different path by doing one more season of Modern Family,” co-creator Christopher Lloyd quipped in a statement, while co-creator Steve Levitan added: “Even after 10 years together, we realized there are still some things our writers don’t yet know about each other’s sex lives.” The eleventh and final season of Modern Family is expected to premiere in September of 2019 meaning it will be officially ending in 2020 on April 8.

1. Schitt’s Creek

In recent years, Canadian comedies have burst into the mainstream television world and leading the pack has been the hilarious series Schitt’s Creek. Fans were devastated when co-creators, stars, and father/son duo Daniel and Eugene Levy revealed the series would be coming back for a sixth season, but it would be the last. “We are very excited to announce that ‘Schitt’s Creek’ is coming back for a sixth season on CBC and Pop in 2020,” Levy posted. “We also wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that we have decided Season 6 will be our last.
