When it comes to young, iconic couples, there is no pair quite like Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar. As king and queen heartthrobs of the ’90s and early 2000s, fans can’t get enough of their real life love. Admittedly they have somewhat dropped off the radar in the past few years, but that doesn’t mean fans don’t love them. They are fiercely private, but they have let fans in on their life together with some social media posts and interviews, so here are 9 things not widely known about the amazing couple!

9. Meeting

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. first met on the set of the 1997 horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer. The film was stocked full of young Hollywood talent at the time including Ryan Phillippe and Jennifer Love Hewitt, and despite meeting at that time when they were 20 and 21 years old, they did not officially begin dating until 2000.

8. Divorce Rumors

Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar may be one of the most down-to-earth and loved celebrity couples out there, but even they were targets of divorce rumors. Shortly after celebrating their 13th wedding anniversary, the pair were faced with tabloid rumors that their storied romance was coming to an end. The reports came about after Freddie Prinze Jr. stepped out looking a little disheleved while “sources” stated the problems started for the couple after Freddie underwent spinal surgery with the source saying, “Sarah took care of him when he couldn’t get out of bed, but as time went on and his injuries healed, she noticed he was in no rush to return to work. Since then, Freddie’s grown content on the couch, playing video games instead of getting paid to voice them.” Of course, there was no base to the rumors, and they are happier than ever.

7. Wedding

After dating for one year, the adorable pair became engaged in April 2001 and then just over a year after that were married in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco in Mexico. Director Adam Shankman, who had become close to Gellar after working together on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, officiated the ceremony. Some of their wedding guests and wedding party included Dule Hill, Shannen Doherty, Eva LaRue and Lindsay Sloane.

6. Working Together

As mentioned, the couple first met on-set, and it would be far from the last time they would work together. They most notably starred together in 2002’s Scooby-Doo and 2004’s Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed as on-screen love interests Daphne and Fred; however, Freddie initially turned down the role and director Raja Gosnell had to turn to Sarah Michelle Gellar to convince her husband to take the part. They now both offer voices for the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

5. The Cameo

Sarah Michelle Gellar also had a notable cameo in the hit 1999 film She’s All That, starring Freddie Prinze Jr. Fans will remember her as one of the girls in the cafeteria, but she resolutely refused to speak for the cameo. “She was there visiting Freddie and we asked her if she would come and do it,” director Robert Iscove shared about her small part. “And she said she would come and do it, but she wouldn’t speak. She wouldn’t say any lines. OK, we don’t know why you wouldn’t say, ‘Thank you,’ or, ‘No.’ But that was her thing and she did it. And to get Buffy in the movie was certainly a big deal, because at that point, Buffy was huge.”

4. Name Change

Both stars have very unique and notable monikers, but in 2007, in honor of their fifth wedding anniversary, Gellar finally legally changed her name to Sarah Michelle Prinze; however, she still goes by Sarah Michelle Geller for work and on social media.

3. Staying Personal

After 14 years of marriage, they are not only of Hollywood’s best love success stories, they are one of the favorites, and although they have always been extremely private about their life together, they have spoken out about how they keep their marriage going strong. “Take the 10 minutes – put the phone down. Have a cup of coffee together. Walk the dog at the end of the night. Read a story with your kids. Make the most of the time that you have. We are all pulled in so many directions, so make sure that, whichever one you are focusing on, you’re present,” Sarah Michelle Gellar stated.

2. Home Life

After essentially disapperaring from the spotlight, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar have led a very elusive home life. In 2009 they welcomed their first child, a daughter Charlotte, and in 2012 welcomed a son, Rocky. They share brief glimpses of their children on social media, divulging they take them to karate classes and cook with them, all done in their prestigious Los Angeles neighborhood. In 2014 they sold their Bel Air Crest mansion and bought a 7,318 square foot mini-mansion in Mandeville Canyon which they then flipped and sold for $7.9 million.

Despite dropping off in their acting careers, it is safe to say that Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar still have no problem living the high life. Combined the duo have an estimated net worth of $34 million, thanks to Freddie’s $19 million and Sarah’s $15 million.
