Soap Opera Deaths We Totally Saw Coming

As Benjamin Franklin once said, only two things are certain in life: death and taxes. Well, death certainly does spill over into the world of soaps and is an occurrence that happens quite often. While most of the time deaths can be quite shocking, there are other deaths that aren’t too surprising for daytime drama fans these days. Below are seven soap opera deaths audiences saw coming — from a mile away!

7. Y&R’s Skye Lockhart

Back in 2011, The Young and the Restless’ (Y&R) Skye Lockhart was supposedly dead and it seemed like all arrows were pointing to Adam Newman as the murderer. Turns out he didn’t kill Lockhart because Skye was still very much alive and living it up in Hawaii. Newman’s girlfriend at the time, Sharon, went on a wild goose chase to find Lockhart and gather proof to clear Adam’s name, so she headed to Hawaii. Most long-time Y&R fans could see something was going to go wrong as soon as the two women were gathered near a bolster volcano. While Sharon tried to save Lockhart from falling into the lava, Skye let go of her hand and fell to her looming death.

6. Y&R’s Adam Newman, Circa 2014

Adam Newman’s death in 2014 was pretty predictable, especially for fans who peruse the internet. Regardless, many fans of the show were shocked and some were even outraged. While we may never truly know why Muhney left the Y&R, when the character was killed off during a car crash in 2014, most fans saw it coming. Most Y&R viewers also could see a resurrection and return of Adam from a mile away as well.

5. Y&R’s Adam Newman, Circa 2016

Adam clearly has nine lives. After Newman died in 2014, he returned to Genoa City in the form of Justin Hartley, and many Y&R viewers grew to love the actor and his portrayal of this unique and dynamic character. Sadly word spread that, after two years on the soap, Hartley was offered a primetime role on the new NBC drama, This is Us. Y&R viewers could feel that Hartley and Adam Newman’s days were numbered, and they were right. By the time This Is Us aired, weeks later Adam would die at the hands of Chloe Mitchell and an explosion.

4. GH’s Nikolas Cassadine

Interestingly enough, General Hospital’s (GH) Nikolas Cassadine died twice in the span of months in 2016. The first time was a staged death, and it seemed the reasoning behind this was the fact that Tyler Christopher and GH producers were in the middle of contract negotiations. Nick Stable would even step in as a recast temporarily as everything was being figured out. Tyler did return to the soap a few months later, but once again announced his departure from the show and later that fall Nikolas met his demise.

3. Y&R’s Courtney Sloane

Courtney was involved in a huge ‘Who Dunnit’ murder storyline on the Y&R in early 2015, and it would’ve been hard to predict that she’d turn out to be one of the victims axed in this plot initially. The arc mirrored the flick I Saw What You Did Last Summer where she, Noah Newman, Mariah Copeland, Abby Newman, Kevin Fisher, Summer Newman, and Fenmore Baldwin were all wrapped up in a murder mystery involving Austin Tavers. When Courtney did not show up to her own wedding (to Noah Newman, no less), and all her friends got a weird text telling them to head to the Abbott cabin, most fans knew what was up and what they would see next.

2. Days’ Alice Horton

It’s always devastating for fans when a soap opera actor or actress passes away in real life. After all, audiences grow very accustomed to seeing them daily and enjoying their talents on the small screen. Sadly, when Frances Reid (a.k.a. Alice Horton) passed away in early 2010, Days of Our Lives’ (DOOL) fans mourned. The incredible actress had been playing the role of the kind, caring, donut-making matriarch of the Horton clan since 1965. As such, the soap created a storyline that was aimed to celebrate Reid and the legendary character she portrayed in Alice, and it was well publicized online to alert audiences to tune in. Alice’s health on the show began to decline and her death was announced on June 23, 2010. Fan favorites were brought back to say goodbye to Alice and the show aired an incredible tribute, including tons of flashbacks and memories.

1. Y&R’s Katherine Chancellor

Much like DOOL’s Alice Horton, Y&R fans saw the death of Katherine Chancellor looming when the beloved and iconic Jeanne Cooper passed away in 2013. Unlike Reid, however, Cooper was filming for the Y&R right up until her death, with her last scene shot in March, five days before she passed. That episode, which also happened to be the Y&R’s 40th anniversary show, aired in early May. When news hit, fans knew it wouldn’t be long before Katherine passed away as well. It was a beautiful storyline that saw Kay travel the world with her soul mate and husband, Murphy, where she also got to visit her son, Tucker, before she left. Murphy would return to Genoa City from the world-wind vacation, and Katherine would not. Fans mourned once for the loss of Cooper, and a second time for her legendary character, Katherine.
