When Jason Hoppy and Bethenny Frankel met back in 2008 it seemed like a real life fairy tale. She was single in her late thirties and co-starring on the popular Bravo reality series, The Real Housewives of New York City. Her relationship with Jason was a whirlwind romance. They got pregnant soon after they started dating and then quickly got married before starring on their own reality TV series. It didn’t take long for things to fall apart. Bethenny and Jason were engaged in a nasty divorce that lasted nearly four years — longer than their relationship! The dust in the courtroom has finally settled, but these two continue to make headlines. Here’s a look at 12 things you probably didn’t know about Bethenny Frankel and Jason Hoppy’s relationship:

12. How They Met

Jason Hoppy, a pharmaceuticals salesman, met the Real Housewives star and in a Manhattan nightclub back in November 2008. He walked up to her and said, “Are you ready to get the stick out of your a–?” which was his way of asking her to dance. Their romance moved quickly after that. The two got a pleasant surprise when they found out they were pregnant in October 2009. Frankel wanted to get married before she became a mom so the two got engaged and wed at the Four Seasons in New York City in March 2010. She was seven months pregnant when they tied the knot and she gave birth to their daughter, Bryn, in May 2010.

11. The Suffered a Miscarriage Together

During their short marriage, Bethenny and Jason managed to get pregnant a second time after welcoming their first daughter, Bryn, in May 2010. At the time, Bethenny was 41, so the fact that she was pregnant at all came as a surprise to her. Unfortunately, the news of their second pregnancy was fleeting and only a day after they found out she was six weeks pregnant, she miscarried. They were able to find out that the baby was a girl and it was incredibly devastating for them both at the time. “I definitely felt like I went through that alone, that was definitely a negative time in my house,” she said in an interview with ET.

10. Bethenny Felt Like She Settled

Now that their relationship has fallen apart, Bethenny and Jason have both attacked each other in the media and it’s pretty clear a war is being waged between the two. Back in 2014, Frankel told Millionaire Matchmaker, Patti Stanger, on her talk show that she settled when she married Jason Hoppy. At the time she was still legally married to Hoppy, but was engaged in a heated custody battle. Prior to that, in October 2013, she had publicly stated that Hoppy wasn’t the love of her life. Ouch!

9. Fought A Lot

Bethenny has never been shy about putting it all out there for the cameras and speaking her truth, so in 2012 when she did an interview with Self magazine about promoting her new talk show, she admitted that her and then-husband Jason Hoppy had strains in their relationship. “[Jason and I] have had strains. We’ve had major fights. When I signed on to do this show, I committed to myself and my fans to be totally honest. You cannot show people only the petals and not the thorns. It’s not fair to them,” she said. In a separate interview she said: “We always had the struggle to accept one another, wanting the other person to be somebody they are not. Neither of us ever backs down, so every slight disagreement can become a full-scale war. Sometimes our disputes feel like a competitive sport.”

8. Initiator and Escalator

When Bethenny and Jason were into their second year of marriage and starring on their hit reality show, Bethenny Ever After, Frankel appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. While on the show, she opened up about the struggles of marriage. Instead of describing themselves as two peas in a pod, she called herself the instigator of fights and Jason the escalator. “[The] second year was way more difficult than the first. I was pregnant when I got married, so we were all excited about the baby and the wedding,” she said. She then went on to admit that her communication skills were lacking. “I’m an initiator or arguments and he’s the escalator. I’ll light that fire, and then there’s a big fire and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, who put that fire there, what happened?'”

7. Jason Loved the Spotlight

While in the middle of their nasty custody battle, Jason argued he should have primary custody because Bethenny used their daughter Bryn as a prop to help further her career. In return, Bethenny argued that Jason loved the spotlight while they were married. He wanted all aspects of their lives on camera and even encouraged Bethenny to take on all kinds of Bravo shows. Bethenny has said that one of the major downfalls in their relationship was fame. “When you bring someone into fame, and they’re left without it…I think some people come in and they see the shiny objects, and they grab at the shiny objects. And [if] it’s taken away? They want it to be taken away from you also.”

6. Jason Resented her Fame

It was clear from watching Bethenny Ever After that Jason Hoppy struggled to find his own ambition while being married to the Skinnygirl mogul whose multi-million dollar business was gaining enormous success during their marriage. In one episode of the show, Frankel offered Hoppy a job and he snapped back, “I want to work with you, not for you.” He often made passive-aggressive comments like, “My balls [were] cut off two years ago.” When she went on Watch What Happens Live in 2015 she alluded to this problem in their marriage when she said: “The power struggle between men and women [exists]. And [it is hard] when the woman is the breadwinner. I think fame, attention, and money does not bring out the best in everybody. I think in that money, in many ways, is the root of evil.”

5. Andy Cohen Influenced Bethenny’s Marriage

When Bethenny Frankel spoke at the NYU Alumni Association’s Speakers on the Square event in 2015, she accused Andy Cohen of pressuring her into getting married even though her gut warned her against it. “It’s all Andy Cohen’s fault, he will admit it. And yes, that’s the point…I was making a decision out of fear. Looking back on that, I don’t really believe in regret, and it was situation where they were giving me a show – a spin off – and I was in a relationship and it ind of just became, ‘This is what’s going on in your life, and this is compelling,'” she said. “My gut did not like that we were doing a show together. My skin crawls thinking about it. I just did not feel right about it, and I kept saying, ‘I don’t want to be the Tori [Spelling] and Dean [McDermott] show. I don’t want to do this.'”

4. Moved Too Fast

Not long before Bethenny publicly announced she was splitting from Jason, she appeared on Anderson Cooper’s talk show and made comments about moving too quickly in her relationship: “I think marriage is a little bit more difficult than I thought. We didn’t date for that long and we were pregnant and so many different things happened at the exact time including having a baby and my business. We were also older, when you get married older you’re set in your ways and that’s when the acceptance really has to come into play.”

3. Why The Marriage Fell Apart

In an interview with People, Frankel said her marriage started falling apart almost immediately as she quickly realized they were extremely incompatible. “I felt like there was an expectation to be someone that I wasn’t. All the things that I’ve tried to resolve in therapy and get past from my childhood reared their ugly head in my marriage. My marriage made me feel like I was a bad person, like I was damaged, I was dysfunctional, I was never going to be happy. But I don’t believe that to be true. Yet there I was — in a relationship that made me feel that way,” she said.

2. Hostile Living Environment

The Skinnygirl founder was only married to Jason Hoppy for two and a half years when they split in December 2012. Frankel was the one who filed for divorce and told Hoppy she would be by writing him a letter (which is how it was supposed to go down as per their prenuptial agreement). He was less than pleased about her decision and “vowed to ruin her.” They both refused to move out of their multi-million dollar condo, but Frankel ended up giving in when he made her living situation unbearable. She testified in court that he “left the house in shambles — dishes piled everywhere, garbage piled everywhere. He’d pee and poop and leave it in the toilet…He would turn the television on as loud as he could and then put the remote in his backpack and leave with it.” He also wouldn’t let Frankel be alone with their daughter. He’d crawl into bed with them and stand over her while she bathed Bryn with his arms crossed. She alleged he hacked into her emails and secretly recorded conversations. In the end, Frankel ended up winning the apartment back in the divorce, but then sold it.

1. Jason Hoppy Arrested For Stalking and Harassment

It’s no secret that Jason Hoppy and Bethenny Frankel’s relationship has become extremely hostile ever since their divorce. Their divorce lasted twice as long as their relationship after battling over custody and money. Just recently Jason was arrested for allegedly stalking and harassing Bethenny. According to online reports, Jason showed up at Bryn’s school while Bethenny was dropping her off and threatened her. Bethenny was standing with a friend when Jason came up to her and said, “I will destroy you, you can get all the lawyers you want, you’ve been warned.” An NYPD spokesperson said Hoppy had sent hundreds of emails and FaceTime calls after a cease and desist letter was sent to him in late November. Bethenny has since been granted a restraining order against Hoppy.
