Nina Dobrev may be best known for her role on The Vampire Diaries, but there are a lot of things many of us don’t know about this brunette beauty. Here are 10 that might surprise you!

10. Born in Bulgaria

She was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, during the same year that the country’s communist government collapsed.

9. Becoming Canadian

She moved to Toronto, Canada, when she was two with her mother and her older brother. Her father had moved there a year earlier to save money to bring the rest of the family over. He delivered pizza and pumped gas to pay for them to move.

8. Former University Student

She briefly attended Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. She studied sociology.

7. Sports Star

She was a sports star in high school. She was a competitive gymnast, played varsity volleyball, soccer, basketball and flag football.

6. Botched Audition

She botched her first audition for The Vampire Diaries. According to her, she was sick , botched it and then sent an audition tape in to keep herself in the running. “None of us thought about her twice after that first try,” Julie Plec, the show’s co-creator and writer, said. “But when we saw that tape, we were all blown away by how wonderful, magnetic and interesting she was. She got the part based on that. She fought for it.”

5. Yoga Enthusiast

According to her, yoga changed her life, so she is currently working on opening her own yoga studio so that other people can have a similar experience.

4. Famous Friends

She’s and Julianne Hough are good friends. “It’s been cool to find an active buddy – there are a lot girlie girls around. We don’t talk about makeup; we talk about life,” she told Cosmopolitan. She’s also close friends with former Gossip Girl actress Jessica Szohr.

3. Making the Switch

When she was 16, she decided to quit gymnastics (she was training to be an Olympic gymnast) and get into acting. Her breakout role was in Degrassi: The Next Generation.

In an interview with Interview magazine, Nina Dobrev said she was a big fan of Jennifer Lawrence: “I’ve really enjoyed watching, because she’s kind of my same age, Jennifer Lawrence. She has tackled both indies and big budget studio films. She has a humility and a presence and a charisma and a humor and intelligence that I really admire that about her.”
