Fans of the beloved former TLC series Trading Spaces were ecstatic to learn that the home renovation was making a comeback on TV and as we get closer to the revival’s premiere, more and more is being told about the upcoming series!
“Not every episode has a happy ending. What one of our designers does with eggshells is shocking. Dozens and dozens of eggs were harmed,” TLC’s executive vice president of development and production Howard Lee told TVGuide, confirming that fans can expect the same design fails and shocking homeowner reaction they loved from the original series.
Carpenter Ty Pennington, who is returning for the revival, echoed Lee’s statement and added that it is the show’s “unpredictability” that makes it stand out from the many other home renovation series that viewers have come to know since Trading Spaces came to an end in 2008. “Most shows now are all reveals of white and beige rooms with a ton of candles and the homeowners loving it,” Pennington said. “With us, there’s always that question mark.”
Another thing that separates the beloved show from others on TV now is the budget. While the budget per room has been doubled to $2000, that is still very low in comparison to most other home makeover and renovation series. “Viewers have become so accustomed to seeing designs done for $50,000 or $100,000. I think this will be inspiring,” Lee explains of the cost-conscious move.
As previously reported, along with Pennington, original host Paige Davis will be returning along with original designers Doug Wilson, Genevieve Gorder, Hildi Santo-Tomas, Vern Yip, Frank Bielic, Laurie Smith and Carter Oosterhouse. Since it is a revival some fresh faces are being added into the mix as well including Sabrina Soto, John Gidding, Kahi Lee, Brett Tutor, and Joanie Sprague.
Although the show will be different from its original which aired from 2000-2008, host Paige Davis has reassured viewers that it will still be the Trading Spaces they know and love. “The new episodes we’ve made are like Coke Classic,” she said.
While no specific date has yet been released, the revival of Trading Spaces and a reunion special will air in 2018.
