Every parent’s worst fear is that something would happen to their kids, and Dancing With the Stars pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy revealed he had to rush his newborn Shai to the emergency room at only a few weeks old!

“We’ve gone through a lot of stuff with him already — some drama and traumatic experiences,” he told ABC News. He went on to explain that when his son, whom he shares with his fiancee and fellow pro dancer Peta Murgatroyd, was just “a couple of weeks old he got a fever and we had to go…to the emergency room.”

As first time parents and with Shai being so young, the pro dancer added that he and Murgatroyd were extremely worried. “We were so like not prepared for the protocol [and] procedure that happened at the emergency rooms with infants that small. Nobody really ever told us anything about that. It was a big shock to the mind and to the heart.”

He continued, “You get to see a little IV on a little baby and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, this is crazy.’ It was a lot for us.”

Maksim added that the scary trip to the hospital has made him even “more diligent.” “I’m such an overprotective, over-thinking, over-planning type of person. You can’t foresee some thing, you can try your best.”

The two Dancing With the Stars pros welcomed Shai on January 4, 2017 and can’t stop gushing about their adorable little boy ever since saying “This is, without a doubt, the best thing that has ever happened to us!” Now that Shai is back in good health he is already going to work with his parents as Peta has been sharing photos of Shai in the dance studio as she preps for her first season back and is partnered with Nick Viall.

Dancing With the Stars season 24 begins Monday, March 20 at 8 p.m.
