Jennifer Aniston’s mother, Nancy Dow, has passed away at the age of 79.
In a statement to Us Weekly, Aniston said ,”It is with great sadness that my brother John [Melick] and I announce the passing of our mother Nancy Dow. She was 79 years old and passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends after enduring a long illness. We ask that our family’s privacy be respected as we grieve our loss.”
Jennifer and her mother had a rocky relationship over the years. The two were estranged for more than a decade. Aniston says these issues stemmed from her mother’s judgmental personality. In a 2015 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Aniston stated, “She was very critical of me.” Dow, who had a career as a model, made Aniston feel insecure about her appearance. “She was gorgeous, stunning. I wasn’t,” Aniston said. “I honestly still don’t think of myself in that sort of light, which is fine.”
Dow capitalized on her tensions with her daughter by penning a memoir, From Mother and Daughter to Friends, that disclosed personal details about Aniston’s life. Due to the estrangement, Aniston did not invite her mother to her wedding with Brad Pitt in 2000. In recent years, the two reconciled.
