At 52 years old, country singer Ty Herndon, is happy to finally be able to publicly announce that he is gay. “I’m an out, proud and happy gay man,” he told People magazine this week.

Although he has known he is gay since he was 10 years old, he has spent his life hiding his sexual orientation because he felt it would not be accepted in his personal life and in his career as a star.

It wasn’t until five years ago that the country star realized he should share his journey (which he notes has had its major ups and downs) as he struggled to hide it.

“During an Anthony Robbins seminar, I realized I had an incredible story that could possibly help someone’s son or daughter or grandchild’s life not be as difficult as mine  has been. Maybe they wouldn’t have to go through as much pain and suffering. It’s time to tell my truth.”

While he said his mother was very understanding, he stated, “[she] probably knew I was gay before I did. She was more concerned about me having a happy life,” he had a hard time dealing with it himself and even married two different women who both knew he was gay, to hide his true self during the early successes of his career.

Now that he has finally opened up, he is also glad to talk about his longtime partner Matt, who was the one to bring him to that Anthony Robbins seminar in 2009 for their one year anniversary.

The singer released the song, “Lies I Told Myself” last year and is very happy with the strides country music has made over the years. Ty gave a shout-out to Kacey Musgraves, thanking her for her CMA winning song, “Follow Your Arrow.”

“There’s never been a song more affirmative of that in country music, and it’s our CMA Song of the Year,” he said.
