The Academy Awards may be the biggest night for the entertainment industry’s biggest films and their stars to honor their work, but it is also one of the industry’s biggest nights for fashion. The pre-Oscars red carpet show is just as anticipated as the awards show itself, and on Sunday Feb. 28, the stars did not disappoint with their best… and worst fashion. There are some we were shocked by their rather bad fashion choices, while others we have unfortunately come to expect to make their way on to worst dressed lists with their questionable gown choices. Some risks pay off, but not for these six stars. Check it out!

6. Kerry Washington

At this point we just expect Kerry Washington to do no wrong. The stunning star is usually absolute perfection in everything she does, but at her Oscars look was definitely disappointing. Washington donned a custom Atelier Versace gown that was a little reminiscent of both bondage and body armor, neither of which are appropriate for the Oscars red carpet. No doubt, she is still gorgeous, but this gown does her no justice at all.

5. Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara has a particular look, and while it often turns head for the wrong reasons, she sticks to it. The Carol star chose a full-sleeved, lace and embellished Givenchy Haute Couture gown, and once again it just did nothing for her. The design included everything from buttons, to an ab-baring center cutout and lace, yet all together it just did not look right. Mara also tends to pull her hair very tightly back given her a very strict and stern look.

4. Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler has always stunned on the red carpet, and has been a highlight of many awards show in the past few years, and that is why her odd, very matronly look at the Oscars was so shocking. The funny-woman opted for a caped full-body, wide-sleeved Andrew Gn gown embellished with floral patterns and butterflies. The gown gave her absolutely no shape and looked way more frumpy than fancy.

3. Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum, rarely if ever wears something simple, and although she enjoys being a fashion risk-taker, it seems to never pay off. The gorgeous model chose an ombre tulle Marchesa gown, which all in all looked a little too haphazard. The one sleeve, bodice cut out and flower embellishments looked awkward and incomplete, and the material seemed a little too much like a curtain.

2. Daisy Ridley

Everyone was expecting way more from Star Wars star Daisy Ridley. The gorgeous actress almost hit the mark with her flapper-inspired dress, unfortunately it just fell flat. Ridley donned a Chanel Haute Couture sheath dress, which fell awkwardly on her figure and gave her absolutely no shape. In the end it was the very awkward tulle ruffle around her middle, and sheer tulle at the bottom which made this dress awful. We know she can do so much better!

1. Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon is usually a style star, but she chose poorly for her Oscars red carpet fashion. Witherspoon wore a deep purple Oscar de la Renta gown, and while the design was nice, it very clearly did not fit the petite star well. It was obviously much too loose around her waist and chest and she seemed to be swimming in it instead of wearing it. Her hair and makeup and accessories looked amazing, but they didn’t distract from the ill-fitting gown.
